The Grey Cup in a nut shell: The Lions had the chance to bury the Bombers in the first quarter, but couldn't get it done. By the end of the half, the Bombers had the momentum. The third quarter was even until on the last play the Lions scored a touchdown on a 66 yard bomb. That seemed to salt it away for the Lions, but the Bombers came back in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns. After the second TD, however, the Bombers kickoff did not go the required ten yards. The Lions took the ball and kicked a field goal which gave them an insurmountable eleven-point lead with just 58 seconds to play.

The Grey Cup is on cable tv channel TSN (the Canadian equivalent of ESPN), yet over one-third of the Canadian population tuned in to the game last night, making it Canada's most watched sporting event of the year.

The Canadian press always ballyhoos hockey over the Canadian league, yet the Grey Cup always gets a bigger tv rating than the Stanley Cup Finals (and the Super Bowl for that matter).

Now the Stamps have filed a complaint with the league about this, saying that the Argos did not seek permission to hire Jones while he is under contract through 2012.

The league today fined the Argos a paltry $5,000 for tampering with Jones.

aloc, my friends are surprised when I tell them that nowadays with the internet it is easier for an American to be a CFL fan than a fan of another league.

1) There are only eight teams to keep track of and get to know the players.

2) There are only four games per week. Their radio broadcasts are all available for free on the internet. They are all played at different times, so when you choose to listen to one, you are not also choosing to miss another.

3) There are many newspaper articles about the league on the internet, so there is no shortage of available news.

The Argos made it official Thursday that they are hiring Montreal offensive coordinator Scott Milanovich as their new head coach. Head coach Jim Barker will retain his duties as General Manager.

The Alouettes announced today that Marcus Brady will replace Milanovich as their offensive coordinator.

it seems that every team in the league is changing coaches and general managers.

aloc, it's common for the teams that don't make the playoffs to change coaches. This year, Wally Buono (who has won more games than any other coach in league history) has decided to retire on top, a week after he won the Grey Cup.

In recent years it has been common for head coaches to leave to become an assistant coach at US universities, because the money is so much better in US college ball.

Don Matthews (whose winning record Wally broke) used to have it in his contract that he could leave after winning the Grey Cup because that would be when he was in the most demand. He wound up coaching five teams!

Big trade today. Offhand, I would say that it's the biggest trade since the Als sent Sam Etcheverry and Hal Patterson to the Ticats fifty years ago.

The Eskimos traded Ricky Ray to the Argos for Steven Jyles, backup kicker Grant Shaw and the Argos' first round draft pick (second overall).

This is the second time Eric Tillman has traded for Jyles. He did it when he was with the Riders too.

I regret that I forgot to tell you this a month ago, when there was still plenty of time to place your order for Christmas. Here's the situation:

The first Grey Cup game was played in 1909. They have played the game every year since then except for three years during World War One. As a result, the 100th Grey Cup game will be played in 2012 in Toronto, and the league is making a very big deal of it.

I don't blame them for emphasizing the hundredth Grey Cup, but it was my opinion in 2009 that they should have done something out of the ordinary to celebrate the Grey Cup's centennial. (I might add that this year's Indianapolis 500 was its centennial, and they made a big deal of that.)

The league's website now has a few items left over from the 2009 Grey Cup including two $4.99 caps. I think that any Canadian league cap is a bargain at $4.99, so I think it is extra special when it is for the Grey Cup's centennial.
