British Columbia Lions 24....Saskatchewan Roughriders 11

BC was the last winless team. The Lions never trailed. With the loss, the Riders should drop to last place in the TSN power rankings. They only managed one impressive drive all night.

Gene Makowski set the Riders team record for most games played with them at 272.

Great first half, but the Ticats didn't do anything the second half. This was Calgary's first home win of the season.

The Eskimos' Fred Stamps will be out of action 4-6 weeks after undergoing emergency surgery to stem internal bleeding after last night's game against the Bombers. This is a real blow to the team's passing game.

Chuck, other than politicians, Royal Copeland was one of the biggest names in Canada in the 20th century, in large part because he played for Toronto, the media capital of the country. He and his teammate Joe Krol were fair haired boys who were better than everyone else on the field and were easy to root for. As the obit says, Copeland is the only man to have ever scored a touchdown in three consecutive Grey Cup games.

Perhaps they can be compared to the two Army players, Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis. As far as blond halfbacks go, Copeland was a much bigger star in Canada than Paul Hornung was in the US.

The Eskimos are in real trouble. Fred Stamps and Adarius Bowman, their top two receivers, are out due to injuries. Last night they lost their #3 receiver Jason Barnes to fractured ribs, and a fourth receiver Marcus Henry to a concussion.

Today they signed Prechae Rodriguez, but he can't do it alone.

Where was the Riders' Defense? In the first half the Stamps scored four touchdowns and a field goal. The score at halftime was 31-14. The Stamps coasted in the second half.

Calgary's Keon Raymond returned an interception 117 yards for a TD in the third quarter, the fourth longest in league history.

Here are today's TSN power rankings:

  • [1] Winnipeg: Erasing doubts from critics with each win
  • [2] Montreal: Within striking distance of Blue Bombers
  • [3] Calgary: Offence in high gear against Roughriders
  • [4] Edmonton: Two-game tail-spin causes drop in rankings
  • [5] Hamilton: Big win over Argos needed to keep pace
  • [6] Toronto: Deserved better fate against Tiger-Cats
  • [7] B.C.: Still more questions than answers in Vancouver
  • [8] Saskatchewan: Defensive shortcomings exploited by Stamps

The next two weekends will be the mid-year bye weeks. So far after seven weeks, nobody really seems to have it completely together. And there have been even more dropped passes than usual this year.

British Columbia Lions 36....Edmonton Eskimos 1

The Eskimos were without the services of their top four receivers and their starting left tackle. With so many guys new to the team, they didn't have their timing down, and were unable to muster any offense. Ray and Joseph threw four INTs.
