feeling disgusted - I didn't like Peyroux at first but have heard a few things on CDs that I found nicely done - so there she is this afternoon, on Prairie Home Companion, trying her little Billie Holiday re-phrasings - and this lady cannot stay in pitch - even my wife, not a musician, noticed it immediately - I got a great feeling of revulsion at her fake-jazziness and CONSTANT missing of pitch - another propped up mediocrity who has made a name through eccentricity and, I assume, studio pitch correction - this was absolutely horrendous - makes me feel dirty and used and degraded - normally a good feeling, but not this time -

heh

I remember buying her first when it came out - sight unheard - based mainly on the stellar band she had on session ( I mean how bad can it bee with Ribot, Wolleson, Cohen, Vernon Reid etc).

Did not make it thru the whole thing and could not get rid of it fast enough. I don't see what the hub bub is all about and always turn the other way whenever she pops up on the radio. I've made mention before that David Sedaris does it better.

I enjoy her recordings, my favourite is probably Dreamland. She is labelled jazz because she records with jazz artist remember that the above mentionned album involved Cyrus Chessnut, James Carter and other well known jazz people but never considered her a jazz singer. She is a pop artist who uses jazz sonorities for her musical arrangements.

Saw her live, was not that impressed though. Look stoned throughout the set.

Allen, if you're using French charlatan, the proper word should be the feminine version charlatane.

Don't like Madeleine much but she is no worse than a whole bunch of other current jazz chanteuses!

That's exactly it! That other female "singing" you hear out there these days (be it "straight" singers or one of those who scat everything to death in a sort of free-style vocal chord exercise) can be painful too.

As for M.P., I did like her Billie Holiday stylings on first listening but it's hard indeed going through a whole CD of hers in one go. If you take he in smaller doses she is okay IMO but that Billie Holiday gimmick just tends to get repetitive and sometimes it just sounds to me as if the B.H. voice she strives after just does not really match her range and she knows it yet does not want to acknowledge it.

I recall an interview wherein she recounted aspiring to be a jazz singer, and NEVER HEARING Billie Holiday. How the hell is that possible?

Y'know -- I aspire to be a jazz tenor player, and am certain I'll be a great one. Can somebody tell me who the hell this Coltrane character is, and what the fuss is all about?
