Daniel A
I'm somewhat intrigued by this band. A friend played "The Commercial Album" for me, and I thought it was fun. I liked the concept and have been trying (not too hard) to find it on vinyl for some years. Downloading the individual 40 one-minute tracks from Amazon at $1 apiece is not the way to go. Any other recommendations? I feel I'm ready to get myself some Residents albums.
Hot Ptah
The several Residents albums I have heard have all been exercises in endurance. I just don't find them very interesting. The concept of the group is far more interesting than the actual recordings. I have a long and proud history of listening to recorded music that drives virtually everyone else out of the room, but I have been unable to understand the appeal of the Residents' recordings. Now, I have certainly not heard all of their many recordings, so if someone has heard some compelling Residents albums, I will find that very interesting to learn about. I think their earlier albums are more intriguing than their latest (though I did see them on tour about 5 years ago and they rocked). They are certainly not a JAZZ group, but I think they do some interesting work. I believe you can download some early classics like 'Duck Stab Wound' and the 'Mole Show' from eMusic.com. Also available is an amazing album of theirs called 'Eskimo', which is an album of ethnic Eskimo music (actually it's all made up electronically by the Residents). I often play this all night on loop while I sleep...but I'm weird. bigtiny

BruceH
I used to like the Residents a long time ago (undergrad college days.) Duck Stab/Buster & Glen was my favorite album, and Eskimo was a good one. I used to have a bunch of their early albums, but I lost interest long ago and haven't listened to them in ages. Kalo
I haven't heard them in many years, but the Residents always used to make me think of Frank Zappa crossed with a mosquito.
Joe
I'm very partial to ESKIMO, THIRD REICH 'N ROLL and THE COMMERCIAL ALBUM. Alas, I think their best work -- the double-sided single that paired their version of The Beatles' "Flying" with a brilliant, pre-digital-sampling phantasy / satire of where those Liverpudlians went after SGT. PEPPER, "Beyond The Valley Of A Day In The Life" -- is not currently available on CD. Santa Dog '07?
BruceH
"Santa Dog" was their best single!
randissimo
edc's on the hoof (but he ain't no sheep)-- AT LEAST three of the Residents last whatever records are among their very best, those being: Demons Dance Alone Animal Lover Tweedles! in fact, it's a creative re-florescence rarely matched in pop music & never, to my knowledge, exceeded. jass & classical-- yes, & ya'll can also argue the Residents are a "composer" in the guise of a pop band. either way, you can work backwards or forwards today & get great stuff. (i still need to catch up w/River of Crime myself.) I dig 'em... Got turned on to them while I was drummer in the San Francisco Mime Troupe in the late 80's by bay area comedy actor Ed Holmes who is also the founder of "The First Church Of The Last Laugh".. www.saintstupid.com
Alexander Hawkins
Not to mention 'The Recedents' - Lol Coxhill, Mike Cooper, Roger Turner - another very fine group!
stuartjewkes
I only have Eskimo and I haven't listened to it yet. It's in my queue from eMusic. From what I've heard of them I think it could be a passionate love affair
