John L Posted November 16, 2007 Report Posted November 16, 2007 I have discussed Bolden with a handful of people who actually heard him play. Consensus: a very uneventful player who was limited to basic blues and known for playing louder than anybody else. I guess Wynton can relate to being creatively limited, and loud. That sounds like something that Peter Bocage probably told you. Yes, Bocage was one of my informants--you have a good memory, because I'm sure that was not a guess. I just put two and two together. I recall that Peter Bocage went on record making disparaging comments on Bolden. I also know that you produced his Legends of New Orleans record. Quote
brownie Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 Article in Forbes on the making of the film. Looks like it will be as difficult to see it as it is listening to that damn Buddy Bolden cylinder Quote
David Ayers Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 Where there are so few facts apparently known I'm not sure a biopic can be anything other than a fantasy, and with the involvement of Wynton likely a tendentious one. Quote
cih Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 (edited) I prefer that episode of 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' where our hero jams with Sidney Bechet and is humiliated on the soprano sax Edited May 15, 2012 by cih Quote
Ted O'Reilly Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 (edited) I prefer that episode of 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles' where our hero jams with Sidney Bechet and is humiliated on the soprano sax Just saw Bob Wilber at the Newport Jazz Party a few days back. He played that soundtrack, using straight soprano for Bechet, and curved soprano for the young Indy. He said he had to re-do the Indy part, as the producer said he played it too well, that the kid wouldn't be that good... I recall seeing that particular show, but didn't realize it had ever been issued on tape or DVD. EDIT: >>I wrote "Newport". I meant "Norwich". Sorry.<< Edited May 16, 2012 by Ted O'Reilly Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 How is it even possible that a biopic of Buddy Bolden could be produced before a biopic of Miles. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 15, 2012 Report Posted May 15, 2012 (edited) Or Diz or Roy or Henry or Bubber or Joe or Pops or etc. Never forget Al Killian! I would be more interested in a film about Red Rodney or Jabbo Smith than either Miles or Buddy. Edited May 15, 2012 by Chuck Nessa Quote
David Ayers Posted May 16, 2012 Report Posted May 16, 2012 (edited) The list of jazz worthies is never ending. Every recorded note merits its own decenially remastered shrine. Only a Borgesian biopic in which every lived minute is amplified to a full narrative hour could adequately honor the true truth of the truly true. Seriously would any of you guys even watch a biopic? I mean, about anybody? This guy is spending his own cash - so what? Biopic is among the most degraded forms of cinema. I suspect the film is in limbo because no matter how he strings together the footage there is no way to make it remotely interesting. Edited May 16, 2012 by David Ayers Quote
