The missing parts of the Hall/Johnson/Dickenson Mosaic would also be great to have on individual CDs, and all of those great Art Hodes sessions, too! Any or all, that is! And I'm sure there are some other things that have never been out or OOP for a long time, the only one that comes to mind and that I would indeed buy is Stanley Turrentine's "Look Out", but I haven't checked how hard it is to find that one... Other than that I have the feeling that most of the stuff has been out by now and is in no real need of yet another reissue... there was a point where the RVGs indeed started getting a bit absurd, for instance when that Lee Morgan album came out again while the "old" version of it was just 2 or 3 years old... The Smith is one of the very few from the well-known/loved/hyped years of BN (1955-1965 roughly?) that has not been readily available, Dizzy Reece's "Soundin' Off" is another one, but I'll eventually get the Mosaic Select even though I have everything else that's on it, except for that one album. The "Tenor Man" album would be interesting though, and some more Pacific items in general. The album Groove Holmes did with Ben Webster is one that has been out but impossible to find for me so far, so there'd be another one to reissue that has already been on CD... but while there was the rather absurd Chet Baker series (almost everything was still available, grouped a bit more reasonably, too - and all of these go OOP now before EMI yurp would put out non-cc versions, too - sucks!) of reissues being reissued, I guess all the other things just wouldn't sell, or at least that's how the execs look at it (who owns BN anyway by now? Otherwise I’d add that one too. Good list, though "Cosmos" isn't that good. Perhaps a reissue could wipe out the backing vocalists, though Ronnie Foster, too. And McGriff's "Black pearl" - which could be made into a twofer with the McGriff/Jr Parker "Chicken fried soul" which I think was recorded at the same gig and issued on UA. paul secor Posted November 21, 2007 Report Share Posted November 21, 2007 In a perfect (or even less imperfect) world, BN would make their entire catalogue available - RVG'd, Addey'd, whatever -make all the reissue fans happy, and get down to the business of recording good new jazz. The bad news is that this world is far from perfect, and far from less imperfect, so neither will happen. I hit the link, got the home page, hit artists, hit A and saw, not without a certain amazement, the name Alpha Blondy, one of my favourite Reggae singers. So I hit the link, to be told that there are no releases by Alpha Blondy (on Blue Note). Er... did Alpha Blondy ever have a release on Blue Note? chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted November 28, 2007 Report Share Posted November 28, 2007 blue note will never reissue the session material we all want to hear. think how many alternate takes there are on those tapes of our favorite blue note pieces. someday, someone will copy them all just like they did in the 80s with the beach boys capitol session tapes, and in the uk in 1982or3 at abbey road with the beatles tapes. in fact i think this already has happneed to a smaller extent. am i wrong in thinking the session tapes contain all the alternate takes? Still, a little of this and a little of that could make a nice two or three CD set. I think those Vitous/Haynes tracks were on the expanded CD editions of "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs", no? So it would be "Early Circle", parts of "Circling In", plus possibly "Song of Singing"... I don't have the playing times of the music, but I guess the Circle material would fit onto two CDs, and with "Song of Singing" it might end up being three? Anyway, I heard back from Michael Cuscuna about the upcoming Horace Silver date and I asked him what was in store for Blue Note in 2008. He replied back with quite a few titles, with both RVG and Connoisseur CDs listed! Blue Note's reissues are not dead (yet). As always, these are the preliminary titles. Unless Michael includes UPC numbers, they aren't ready to go out the door. There are lots of unissued tracks listed as rejected in the discography, including 3 untitled blues (surely ONE of them must be a blinder?) and "Tunisia", "Joy spring" (now that would be an interesting one) and "Red sails in the sunset" (would love to hear how he did that one).
