conversation with Barry Harris, circa 1977:

"Barry, what do you think of Dorothy Donegan?"

"Man she's got chops like Tatum, but no taste. Weird broad..."

The several times I heard her in clubs, that was my impression. Gave me a headache.

anybody heard her chiaroscuro recordings?

Way, way back... We had them at one radio station or another (can't recall which one). I don't have any in my own collection. They're - how shall I say? - typically Donegan. If Mal Waldron was Hemingway then she was Jackie Susann. I heard her in performance in NYC circa 1981 and pretty much agree with Larry Kart. I recall attending a rehearsal for the Women in Jazz show that Rosetta Reitz organized. I pity the poor drummers and bassists she worked with, that's for sure. I hope that they were paid well. Speaking of pay, that was the main thrust of her conversation at that rehearsal, finding out when George Wein was going to pay her.
