AndrewHill Posted November 12, 2007 Report Posted November 12, 2007 (edited) I don't know if the movie has been discussed in its own thread, but I have plans to see it here in Cleveland on November 18th. Has anyone seen the movie yet? Anybody got plans to see it? I'm particularly interested in the footage they discovered of one of the Ayler bands in the mid-sixties (maybe the band with Don Ayler, Sampson, Fowell and Harris maybe?). If you have seen the movie, can you provide a brief review of it? Thanks, HG Edited November 12, 2007 by Holy Ghost Quote

sidewinder Posted November 12, 2007 Report Posted November 12, 2007 (edited) Check out this thread for some discussion of the 'My Name Is Albert Ayler' movie. It's certainly worth seeing, with quite a bit of rare footage. Ayler Edited November 12, 2007 by sidewinder Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 12, 2007 Report Posted November 12, 2007 I think I'll be seeing it in Austin next Monday. Looking forward. Quote

AndrewHill Posted July 19, 2008 Author Report Posted July 19, 2008 Ok, well I wasn't able to see this movie back in November because plans fell through, but by some stroke of luck, it was shown again in Cleveland, this time at the Cleveland Museum of Art; so I asked my older daughter if she would like to go since she has heard me talk about and play Ayler for years now, and so much to my chagrin and surprise she said yes! So off we went tonight to watch the film together. My God, I've never seen anything more beautiful then that couple-minute clip of Ayler in '66-WOW! That was some amazing footage!!! WHERE'S THE REST???? I've never seen Ayler animated so it just hit me like a ton of bricks; how he lifted the horn up and all of those notes just pouring out of him and his horn like he was a conduit for the music-it was so amazing and spiritual that it brought me to tears-no musician has ever done that to me-it was amazing to watch what I've been listening to all this time! The Foundation Maight footage was an additional bonus! WOW again! Man, the footage of him and Sunny, Gary and Bernard was cool-I just can't believe the footage that Caspar got for this film. At the end, I found my daughter was moved too, who really liked the man Albert Ayler-and the music really touched her too. It was cool to see. We talked about Ayler's death on the way home and I tried to explain as best as I could, the different reasons why things happened the way they did. She could only say what would the world be like if Albert were still here? I thought she posed a good question and it was a positive way to end the evening. Quote
Patrick Posted July 20, 2008 Report Posted July 20, 2008 HG, great father/daughter/jazz/cinema story! Quote
AndrewHill Posted July 20, 2008 Author Report Posted July 20, 2008 Thanks Patrick! We had a great time-not just the movie, but listening to music in the car and talking! My older one is at an age where she can start appreciating some of this stuff, and the fact that she's interested in some of my stuff is just awesome. We watched The Miles Davis Story together last week and she was asking a lot of terrific questions and made some astute comments like "I like Miles Davis but I don't like the fact that he used drugs" This week, I'm planning on taking her to the Science Musuem to see the Albert Einstein exhibition-she absolutely loves Einstein! I can't wait! Its going to be so much fun! Quote
Patrick Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 Is the Einstein thing at the Science Center down by Rock & Roll HOF and Browns Stadium? ...maybe Dexter in the 'Round Midnight film? Quote
AndrewHill Posted July 22, 2008 Author Report Posted July 22, 2008 Yes, right by Browns Stadium (RR H of F is closer to E9th I believe). Quote
