brownie Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 (edited) Universal France is releasing next month an 8CD box 'Chet in Paris' that will add quite a lot of new material (alternate takes only it seems) to the previous 4 individual CDs of the Barclay sessions that came out via Polygram in 1988. Some details are available here! A discography of what's been released so far from these Barclay sessions dating from October 1955 through March 1956 can be seen on this site. jazzbo Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 Looks really good. . . and expensive. Quote
Head Man Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I have the original four separate CDs and they contain some of my favourite Chet Baker. The new box set looks interesting but I wonder who is going to pay 106 euros for what is already available plus umpteen alternate takes? Quote
Claude Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 The Paris recordings are great, but I would have preferred getting the master takes only. Maybe Definitive will do that I currently have two CDs culled from these sessions, "Chet Baker Quartet featuring Dick Twardzik" (2003 Universal reissue) and "Chet Baker Quartet plays Standards" (Jazz in Paris). Tthe new box will be available for 80€ at JPC: http://www.jpc.de/jpcng/jazz/detail/-/hnum/9888368 Quote
brownie Posted November 3, 2007 Author Report Posted November 3, 2007 Amazon.fr has the box priced at €81,33. Quote
Rosco Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 I've been waiting to see if a collection of these would appear, so this is great news. I'm wondering if I really need all the alternates, but I'm not going to gripe if I can find it at a good price. What's that in real money? Quote
bichos Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 interesting, but i wish there would be more with dick twardzik!! keep boppin´ marcel Quote
Head Man Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 I've been waiting to see if a collection of these would appear, so this is great news. I'm wondering if I really need all the alternates, but I'm not going to gripe if I can find it at a good price. What's that in real money? 80 euros = approx £56 or $116. If you add shipping that comes out to more than I'd ever pay for it! Quote
Claude Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 (edited) They could have made this a limited edition of 500, because that's probably the number they're going to sell, at that price. Edited November 4, 2007 by Claude Quote
jazzbo Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 (edited) I was told to order this for myself as an Xmas gift and did. It came to about 115 bucks total (the set showed up in my basket at about 69 Euros because VAT was removed). 499 to go. Edited November 4, 2007 by jazzbo Quote
Tony Pusey Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 Rosco- real money? what do you want Zlotys? or Katanga crosses? Last I looked the green back went through the floor... Quote
Rosco Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 Rosco- real money? what do you want Zlotys? or Katanga crosses? Last I looked the green back went through the floor... I have as much chance of figuring out Zlotys as Euros. £56 doesn't sound too bad (Still, just the master takes and half the price would sound even better) If I can find it for under £40 I'll bite for sure. mikeweil Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 I would like to hear how Francy Boland sounded behind Chet on the last sessions covered here, but I do not need all of this box. Are there still single CDs of those sessions? Quote
Head Man Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 I would like to hear how Francy Boland sounded behind Chet on the last sessions covered here, but I do not need all of this box. Are there still single CDs of those sessions? They're all shown as available on Amazon from resellers for silly prices! Perhaps now's the time to sell mine before the rush starts! Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Somehow Ia gree with Claude. The master takes would be sufficient for me. This leads me to this question: In the early 80s these Chet In Paris sessions were reissued on 3 LP's on the BLue Star label. Due to certain circumstances at that time I snapped up Vol. 2 and 3 as SPANISH pressings of the Blue Star LPs but I never was able to get hold of Vol. 1. Late on I found out the French Blue Star reissues included a DOUBLE LP of Vol. 1 and 2 and Vol. 3 as a single LP (no wonder I never saw a single LP of Vol. 1 again). The only time I ever saw a copy of that double LP somehow I failed to grab that too. Is there any reissue of the material from Vol. 1 (apart from that new box set) available - short of getting a copy of that Spanish pressing the Vol. 1 Blue Star LP? Quote
brownie Posted November 5, 2007 Author Report Posted November 5, 2007 Single CDs? There's this compilation also this Jazz in Paris CD has the session with Gérard Gustin, Jimmy Bond and Bert Dahlander: Quote

brownie Posted December 3, 2007 Author Report Posted December 3, 2007 Saw the box which is out today. Price was around €100 (about $145) at my favorite record shop! I don't plan to spend that kind of money on this (will wait for a more reasonably priced secondhand box)! The box is very nice but it does contain eight rather brief CDs. One disc per session. I did not check on all their lengths but at least two of them had less than 20 minutes of music All this could have been easily included on 5 discs. Quote

So there's not much more music really than the old four discs contained? They could have done better than spreading it onto more CDs, but I guess they think we'll pay more like this? I assume it will rather lead to them selling less... 100€ for an 8CD box is way too much anyway (except maybe for the Ayler box or something similarly incredible)! Claude Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 (edited) Here's the track list. Tony Pusey Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 I have only recently begun listening to the young Chet, and the Barclay gessions were on my wants list, tho I did not know how much material existed, so I was initially quite keen on picking up this box, but , now having seen how short some of the records are, here is one repackaging concept which will not find its way, chez nous! Un rip off! Quote
Swinging Swede Posted December 3, 2007 Report Posted December 3, 2007 at least two of them had less than 20 minutes of music Ridiculous. Quote
