bertrand Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 There are two other color pictures of Larry in the softcover book of Frank Wolff photos. Jim, I have never seen the cover of Heaven On Earth - please hip us to it. Bertrand. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 I have Mother Ship, the LT pressing. I'll see if I can scan the cover here... Quote
Ed S Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Thanks Jim I'll take the LT cover over the new one. The new one, IMO, tries too hard to look like a classic BN cover and while it does a good job at that, it misses the mark by not representing the musical content appropriately. Quote
bertrand Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Someone on the old board had claimed this was a picture of the Twin Towers of the WTC. Now that I finally see a large picture, I'm sure it is NOT. There's at most one building in the picture (is that a building?) and it could be any building. Bertrand. Quote
Daniel A Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 The blue tube in the middle looks like an upside-down church organ pipe. Quote
bertrand Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Daniel, That would make sense. The whole thing is a kind of weird-angle shot of a church organ. This is a Larry Young record, after all! Bertrand. Quote
JSngry Posted September 15, 2003 Author Report Posted September 15, 2003 Jim, I have never seen the cover of Heaven On Earth - please hip us to it. This is the best I could find online. Sorry... Quote
JSngry Posted September 15, 2003 Author Report Posted September 15, 2003 (edited) (is that a building?) No Dude, I tell you - IT'S THE MOTHER SHIP!!! Edited September 15, 2003 by JSngry Quote
JSngry Posted September 15, 2003 Author Report Posted September 15, 2003 Jim, I have never seen the cover of Heaven On Earth - please hip us to it. This is the best I could find online. Sorry... mine's (much) bigger (again) And better! Thanks! Quote
shawn·m Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Jimmy wants the whole cupful! I always assumed Ruth Lion was passing by when this photo was taken. Quote
BFrank Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 THE BLIMP! THE BLIMP! THE MOTHERSHIP! THE MOTHERSHIP! Nice Beefheart reference! B) Quote
Parkertown Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 (edited) And I had always hoped the new Mother Ship cover would make use of this photo, from the Mother Ship session. He's in that "other place"! Edited September 15, 2003 by Parkertown Quote
DrJ Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Have to say I am glad they are not using the original LT covers. To me they have an ECM feel that is incongruous with the music (not that there's anything wrong with ECM covers, many are beautiful, but this type of feel just doesn't fit the music BN was recording IMHO). Quote
BFrank Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Personally, I thought the LT covers were cheap looking. The photos were OK, but slapped in the middle of that generic cover, it just didn't do anything for me. ... but that's just my opinion. I could be wrong! Quote
mikeweil Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Opinions are never wrong! In addition to my dislike of the LT covers, I think they saved on sound quality as well: all of the Connoisseur or other reissues of LT albums I have sound better than the LPs. So I don't miss them at all. Let's welcome the music and take the cover as it is. As far as "Heaven On Earth" is concerned: Isn't that Larry's wife Althea on the cover? Then I'd understand ... Her vocals are harder to endure ... Quote
Jazzdog Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Have to say I am glad they are not using the original LT covers. To me they have an ECM feel that is incongruous with the music (not that there's anything wrong with ECM covers, many are beautiful, but this type of feel just doesn't fit the music BN was recording IMHO). I have seena few (none that I remember wanting to pick up) but those covers always reminded me of those cheapo looking A& M style Chuck Mangione records that my mom used to buy when I was a tyke. "Chase the Clouds Away" it was a picutre of a rooftop and Chuck is there rising out of thin air blowing his flugel. Then I saw some similar looking Wes Montgomery covers and I thought...Jeez!!! Those covers always put me off the music! Quote
.:.impossible Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 I'd choose the new cover anyday, but I haven't yet heard the music... it does look like a Miles design. Definitely see a resemblance between this and the Delightfulee cover. I would have thought they'd have gone for something a little more "Mothership," but I won't complain. I think both are killer photographs of Larry. I've always been told that Jimmy Smith had an imaginary accordian that he would carry around and play for the photographers when the mood arose. Quote
JSngry Posted September 16, 2003 Author Report Posted September 16, 2003 Well like I said, not everybody dug the LT covers! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 98% of the time I'll take an artist photo on the cover. I find the happy/laughing photo of LY entirely compatible with the music on the disc. "More adventurous" music is in no way somber. As a BN "student" since the '50s, I think the cover is a dandy. I don't dislike the LT covers, but they were a product of the time. Quote
Jazzdog Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 I don't dislike the LT covers, but they were a product of the time. A time best left to history. Quote
JSngry Posted September 16, 2003 Author Report Posted September 16, 2003 I like it. Lots, in fact. Quote
DrJ Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 Me too! It would be a much BETTER fit with the music, although again, the cover they did come up with is just fine by me, it's not that big an issue as far as I'm concerned. Quote
Soul Stream Posted September 16, 2003 Report Posted September 16, 2003 (edited) When ARE they going to let us start running that reissue program damn it! ...and p.s...not that I don't dig the effort. But that mothership cover kind of makes it look like someone cut off Larry's head and put it in a box. B) Edited September 16, 2003 by Soul Stream Quote
JSngry Posted September 16, 2003 Author Report Posted September 16, 2003 That's what they do on Mother Ships. Don't you read the Weakly Werld Noose? Quote
