sidewinder Posted September 14, 2003 Report Posted September 14, 2003 Thanks for the info ! Is this just on the Bavarian channel or will it be broadcast nationally? Unfortunately, I can't get the Bavarian stuff Quote
Claude Posted September 14, 2003 Report Posted September 14, 2003 It was on the bavarian program of the german 3rd channel only. I can't get it either, though I live close to the german border. But I've seen the movie on ARTE some time ago. Unfortunately jazz and other cultural minority programs are only broadcasted on the regional german channels, 3Sat (Germany/Swiss/Austrian channel) and ARTE (german/french cultural channel), and always at night. The recent Albert Mangelsdorff special was on the north german channel NDR only. This weekend, 3Sat broadcasted two concerts (90 minute programs each) from the Jazzbaltica 2003 festival, Dave Holland Quintet and Pat Metheny Quartet. Quote
Christiern Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 None of you is missing much,IMO. As I recall, it was a very disappointing, somewhat sloppy documentary. Quote
rockefeller center Posted September 15, 2003 Author Report Posted September 15, 2003 None of you is missing much,IMO. As I recall, it was a very disappointing, somewhat sloppy documentary. 1961 Baden-Baden Coltrane footage ("Impressions") in slow motion with a "John Coltrane 1942" text insert plus "Blue Train" playing in the background - strange mixture. JohnS Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Is this the one with Tommy Turrentine and others reminiscing amongst other things? If so pretty disapointing stuff. Quote
shawn·m Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 I kept missing broadcast appearances so I finally just bought the VHS. But then I happened upon the last 15 minutes of Part One while channel surfing recently. It seemed to be a different edit and contained material I didn’t remember seeing before. Are there two or more different versions? Quote
DrJ Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 If it is the one with Turrentine et al, it flat out sucked. Not accurate, not detailed, not well-shot or edited, and no coverage at all for some major players on the label. Boo. Quote
Claude Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 It's a superficial movie, more about the Blue Note fashion style (covers, photography) than about the music. Not surprisingly, Julian Benedikt's next "jazz movie" was about William Claxton's photography. Blue Note - A Story Of Modern Jazz (1996) Jazz Seen (2001) Quote
sidewinder Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 (edited) By some minor miracle my old analogue sat system did have Bayern 3 after all . I quite enjoyed it but it could certainly have been done a lot better and with more rigour. Still, it was nice to see people like Charlie Lowrie and Michael Cuscuna interviewed (in Mosaic's back storage room no less, surrounded by lots of black boxes ) and also a bit of solo Andrew Hill (who wasn't interviewed ). There was footage at the end of Tommy Turrentine and Lou Donaldson looking at old B&W Francis Wolff prints (from the Mosaic photo drawer) taken when they were at their prime. Sort of poignant and sad the way that was presented .. Edited September 15, 2003 by sidewinder Quote
shawn·m Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 It may not be a scholarly work or much of an in-depth documentary, but taken as jazz oriented entertainment, I didn’t think it was so bad. Hey, I’d rather watch this than 95% of TV’s general fare! Quote
Christiern Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 To say that it could have been worse is not to say much. It so missed the point that it was sad to see someone that clueless make a film about Blue Note. Why accept crumbs? Quote
shawn·m Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 Why accept crumbs? Because if there ever was a loaf, somebody seems to have pinched it. Quote
