jazzhound Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I see some listings on EBAY with flat edge descriptions of prestige lps. I have some Blue Notes with flat edge, but all my west 50th prestige records seem to have a lip that can be felt if not seen. were there different pressings of prestige lps with the same label, some flat edge , some not? or were only early Blue Notes flat edge? brownie Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 I have quite a number of Prestige 50th albums, never ran into a flat-edge version. Will check further on the ones I possess and may report back. Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Why did they start making LPs with a raised rim? (Can't be asked to find the "Stupid questions" thread.) MG Quote
Chas Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 Why did they start making LPs with a raised rim? (Can't be asked to find the "Stupid questions" thread.) The raised rim is a groove guard which makes it easier to stack records in a record changer without scratching them . With the label and outer rim being higher than the grooves , the resulting concavity does however introduce additional tracking errors not found on flat discs . Quote
porcy62 Posted October 24, 2007 Report Posted October 24, 2007 (edited) Why did they start making LPs with a raised rim? (Can't be asked to find the "Stupid questions" thread.) MG Basically it was a genius who thought that, after 50 years from his age, some rich audiophile nuts wouldn't like the idea of their 10K $ cartdriges droping off from the outer side of the record breaking the cantilever handmaded by Hattori Hanzo. brownie Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 I was under the impression that the raised rim trend was started after the success of sales of record changers... or am I wrong? Quote
