7/4 Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Eat well and listen again. Take two aspirin and call me in the morning. On second thought, don't call me in the morning. Quote
BERIGAN Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Sorry to hear this happened again! 2 things. One, read what that guy below said, he seems pretty smart! 2 you still seem to want to put off getting a security system, is is a cost issue??? I understand that perfectly, if that's the reason, but if it isn't....what are you waiting for??? You are so lucky someone hasn't just stolen the expensive stuff so far, but they may really need a fix soon. Oh wait, I guess 3 points seeing what you said about the weird stuff moved back in October. A stretch perhaps, but is there any chance he/they wanted candles for the house next to you that is abandoned? Does it look like anyone has lived inside there??? Not saying you should really stick your nose too far inside that place! Joe, very sorry to hear about this! I did want to mention one thing.... One really weird part, and the first sign that something was amiss: he had carried a belt from my upstairs closet, as well as a bag of tealight candles from the upstairs computer room all the way downstairs, only to leave them at the back window. It made no sense at all, as these items had no value, and shouldn't have even caught his attention. Also thought it was strange that after he removed the money from the firesafe, he locked it back up, and took the key with him. Then he closed the window behind him when he left (the front door was still locked). This does seem pretty weird! Here in Atlanta, there have been folks broken into more than once, mainly by Meth addicts. Kind of sounds like someone who was messed up, robbed you, doesn' it? Not trying to unnecessarily worry you, just recall they know you had cash, and they may have thought about the other items for later robberies. So, get some system like those mentioned before, asap!!! And get lots of stickers from those folks to put on every window/door! IF they would come back, seeing you have ADT, or whathaveyou will make them look for an easier target..... Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 24, 2008 Report Posted January 24, 2008 Where's Chuck Norris when you need him ... Good guitarist but probably no better than Joe... MG Quote
Joe G Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 Believe it or not, the culprits have been caught! I just went down to the station to reclaim two of the stolen items. The detective didn't give me any details about how they were busted, and I didn't press. She said, "these kids." They were going to go back to the house to look for more of my stuff. Amazing! Quote
vajerzy Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Excellent!! I hope they're not juveniles but adults. Quote
Aggie87 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Glad they were caught and that you got some (all?) of your stuff back! But you might still want to take some precautions - dog, alarm system, or something. If they were planning to return, it's very possible they may have told their buddies about your place, and your goodies, so you still may have eyes following you. Quote
Elissa Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Do they think it was the same kids both times/ Quote
Joe G Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 Do they think it was the same kids both times/ She said that it probably was. I think they got a good print last time, so that might be the clincher. Yes Eric, I will still be taking further precautions - probably insuring my guitars and getting hooked up with ADT. But no, only two items have been recovered so far. Quote
Ron S Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I just saw this! I hope it didn't happen while you were staying with me. Quote

Good news, Joe! I bet the important thing to you is that you now know who was involved. When you do not know then your imagination can conjure up all kinds of scary ideas. You didn't press charges. You are so nice, Joe. Man, I would have been hopping mad, especially since they hit me twice. But you have to take all things into consideration in these cases; and you apparently have. Good luck and sleep well from now on! Quote

Good luck and sleep well from now on! I don't think he said he didn't press charges--he said he didn't press for details of how they were arrested. As a former prosecutor, I'll personally moiderize Joe if he doesn't press charges! Who knows how many other houses these kids have burglarized (or will in the future if they're not prosecuted). Quote
Joe G Posted January 26, 2008 Author Report Posted January 26, 2008 Right - didn't press the detective for the details of the case. Nice; well, I do have compassion for "these kids" in the sense that I know they need to get on a better path, and fast. But, in order to uphold the law, they will be charged with a felony. Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Good thing, Joe. I just hope you've recovered. Quote
papsrus Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Any idea if these are the same people responsible for the first break-in? I would guess that's pretty likely. Or some of their friends. Also, did the police say if they were linked to any other break-ins in the area? What about a neighborhood watch group? The police could help you and your neighbors set it up, I think. Just spit-ballin' ... Quote
RDK Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 Very glad to hear they were caught, Joe. If nothing else, the closure will be satisfying. Like just about everybody, I've had my share of car break-ins - and once a basement storage unit was broken into in a condo coplex I was in - but I've only really been robbed once... and I was there at the time. I had been in L.A. for only about a year, and my girlfriend (now wife) was in San Diego for the weekend, when there was a knock on my apartment door and I opened it to a couple of friendly faces who said they lived down the hall. Now I hadn't lived in this building long and didn't know many people in town, so I was pleased to meet a couple of guys my age, who lived in my building, and who seemed amiable enough. I forget the reason they gave at the time, but they locked themselves out of their apartment or needed to use the phone or something, so I invited them in, offered them a drink, and we chatted for a while. They eventually left, we shook hands... and a few minutes later I realized something was amiss. It turns out they walked off with a box of CDs and a watch (a knockoff Rolex! ). What they had done (I only realized after) was that one of them slipped out to the hall, presumably to return to his apartment, while I was engaged with the other. That's how they moved the "loot" out, and then casually picked it up when they left for good a few minutes later. It turned out, of course, that they didn't live in my building after all - which was probably fortunate for me 'cause I would have pounded them had I run into them again (and I've never hit anyone in my life). Overall, nothing much was taken, but the feeling of violation and having been taken for such a naive fool really stung. Stuff like this tends to make one cynical and suspicious of people, but I was determined not to let it get to me in that way. I've always believed the vast majority of folks out there are good, and as corny as it sounds I wasn't about to let a couple of petty thieves change that. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 It turns out they walked off with a box of CDs and a watch (a knockoff Rolex! ). I hope that the CDs were a batch of Andorran ripoffs. Divine justice. :rsmile: Quote

Dan Gould Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I think they got a good print last time, so that might be the clincher. A good print lifted from the crime scene was the clincher? You don't say. I guess watching TV has its advantages. Seriously, Joe I am very pleased to hear that the bastards got caught and will face charges (keep us informed) and that you are getting at least some of your stuff back. Quote
JSngry Posted January 26, 2008 Report Posted January 26, 2008 I do have compassion for "these kids" in the sense that I know they need to get on a better path, and fast. But, in order to uphold the law, they will be charged with a felony. It's the ugliness of America these days that the only options seem to be "catch and release" or imprison. In neither scenario is "getting on a better path" likely. Although, if "these kids" (and are they in fact young folk?) are in fact just a bunch of low-life hoods who never can/never will rise above being parasites on society, then, hey. But if they still got some gleam of life left in their eyes, you'd want to think that "salvation" remains at least a possibility, that probation and some functional social intervention mechanisms would be in place to give them one more workable chance to decide what kind of a life they're going to make for themselves. But dream on about that... Quote
