connoisseur series500 Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) Played in the "expert" (2000-2199) Section of the Mid America Class Championship (chess) this weekend and I managed to defeat the 13th highest rated female player in the nation: 13 Vayserberg, Tatiana NY USA 2152 It was a tough game to judge, and I offered a draw at one point. She declined the offer, and I beat her about 15 moves later. She's not the highest rated player I've ever beaten, but she's got a "name." I finished w/ 2 points out of 3 in a very tough section. My own rating is 2004. It was a fun weekend. Edited October 15, 2007 by connoisseur series500 Quote
papsrus Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Nicely done! Play a little chess myself, but nowhere near your level, obviously. Quote
Tom Storer Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Congratulations! I'm not a player of games myself, but my brother was big into chess and played tournaments in his younger days, so I can appreciate your satisfaction. Quote
bertrand Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 For a minute there I thought it said 'knocked up'. Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Congrats, Paul! You must be very proud! Quote
Niko Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 in seventh and eighth great the other boys in my class always played chess during breaks but i never understood what was so interesting about it; quick googling, the guy who mostly won has a 2536 rating these days (10 years later)... congratulations anyway, don't know what winning in chess is like, but i guess its much like winning elsewhere (a nice thing) Quote

Why on Earth would that be? Tennis, Golf, you know things that depend on physical strength to one degree or another ... but Chess? Or are the rankings subdivided by gender? And again, why would that be? Anyway, congrats, Paul! Ever think about becoming a chess hustler? There was an article in the Times a week or two ago about guys making pretty good money at it. Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 well, get her pregnant and she won't be able to play as well - first, she'll have to sit 5 feet from the table, and second, she'll be puking so much she won't be able to concentrate. Than, when labor kicks in, move the pieces around so it's instant checkmate - Quote
T.D. Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Great job, congratulations! For the chess fans on the forum, you might think about posting the game (doesn't have to be annotated), so we could play it over... Quote

No hustling for me. I'm old and my mind works too slowly. I've never played close to my abilities in blitz chess. Also, the whole concept of hustling is inimical to me. I'd never think of doing it. As for gender separation: I guess it's a traditional thing. Women have been moving up in the chess world over the last 10 years or so, but they still generally lag behind their male counterparts. They have separate rankings and separate tournaments. Women, however, can play in male tournaments if they desire. Men aren't allowed in theirs. Quote
Aggie87 Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Where's the link to the chess hotties again? Quote
Big Al Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Way to go, Paul! I play a little chess, and I know how difficult the game is since I routinely get outsmarted by kids 1/3 my age! Still a fun game, though; good for keeping the mind busy! Quote
BruceH Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 You know, it's not nice to go around knocking people off. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Yes, big congrats - considering the size of the US the 13th ranking must be awesome. Quote
T.D. Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 Where's the link to the chess hotties again? I fear, based on experience with chess sites, that an urge to look at chess hotties correlates strongly with a need to get out more... But I do recall a certain World Chess Beauty Contest Quote
tonym Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 As a chess player I can't imagine how chuffed you must be feeling with yourself today Conn! I run a chess 'club' at my son's school every Monday so I'll be telling the kids how I know someone who's achieved such a feat Quote
Noj Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 I told all the chess players in the office about it and all were impressed by both the accomplishment and Conn's 2004 rating. Quote
