These were all 78s (singles) not albums. Labels include Decca, Apollo, Aladdin, Victor, Clef/Norgran/Verve, etc.

I do understand it is easier to ask others to do your research but the work is rewarding and many times more reliable than free info.

As far as the Amazon listing is concerned, you need to learn about the "scroll" feature on the right of you screen. This will give you a list of the tunes and a capsule review of the set.

I see the Proper site says the box is in short supply. Time to make a decision I'd say.

Proper used to have discos up on their website... seems not any longer.

I assume the box covers mostly what was on the mosaic, but I know that it goes beyond that, including some of the first Verve dates of Jacquet's from 1951 (with wrong personnel info given, if I remember correctly).

The Mosaic is a magnificient collection, and I guess for all those who were too late, the Proper would be a good way to catch up with some of music that was included.

But what about the Verve sessions? Is there anything out, besides "The Kid and the Brute"? (long OOP by now, I guess.)

I'll have to check what there is, from those years, but I'm just wondering about CD reissues for the moment!

The second 10 inch album on "The Kid...", by the way, continues where the Mosaic ended, with the RCA sessions on disc four - very similar in style, Illinois' "little big band" - pretty good stuff!

And wasn't James Moody's band in the 50s a similar but more boppish thing, three or four horns (usually Moody w/tp/tb/bari) and rhythm, doing these arrangements that sound like small big bands, and playing rather accessible music, touring etc.?

The earlier part of this session will be on Classics 1451, but the entire session won’t fit. However, I just discovered that this album came out this year on a Membran CD in their Original Long Play Album series, but under its later Verve title Illinois Jacquet And His Orchestra.

Swing’s The Thing (Clef MGC 750) [16 Oct 1956]

Recently out on a Japanese CD, and even more recently on a Lone Hill Jazz CD, which adds the Cool Rage session

the Cool Rage session (part of Verve VE2 2544) [21 apr 1958]

Just 4 short tracks that were first released on a much later compilation. I assume they would have been part of Jacquet’s next Verve album, but he and the label split before more material had been recorded, and the session remained in limbo. It’s available on the aforementioned Lone Hill Jazz CD

Wow, thanks a lot for that research work! Then the two Classics plus the Membran will fill up the gaps! After that it goes on with the Lone Hill discs - I wasn't aware that the first of those contains the last of the Verve material (even though I posted the info myself in post #8 of this thread...)

I'll look out for that Membran disc, then! I only have two of those so far (Hot & Cool/Cats & Chick and one by Woody Herman, plus a CDR of the great Vic Dickenson/Urbie Green - not a biggie, they don't pay no one anyway...) - I guess their releases aren't up to latest standards, but it's great to have the music available, for sure! (They're the same company who did the cheapo single discs of Candid and related materials, plus the 2CD long-book Modern Jazz/Blues Archive sets, as well as 4CD long-books, as well as the cheapo and wrongly-annotated 4CD Quadromania sets).

Listening to this album tonight, which inspired me to find this thread.

"For Once In My Life" is amazing. The whole thing, but Wynton's solo especially, sounds to me like a teary-eyed down-and-out who just knows his number is up. It's too tragic for words.

bought the Quadromania Jacquet yesterday. It contains (much of) the material from the 1945-50 Mosaic but ends with the final tracks on the 47-51 Classics. I still have some gaps there... I got the Lonehills last week, and I have the great Verve Elite disc, so I'm not sure I really need the 51-52 and 53-55 Classics (they seem to be hard to find by now, all of Jacquets Classics).

I have an italian vinyl LP, "CURCIO/I GIGANTI DEL JAZZ vol 92, the musicians are Illinois Jacquet, Kenny Barron, Jimmy McGriff, George Freeman, Bobby Cranshaw, Buddy Rich.

The tracks are, A side, Soft Winds, Sweet Georgia Brown, How Long, B side, Courage, All Right.

Is this an album or a compilation? If an album is it on CD, what is it called and when was it recorded?

I have tried to track it down but my Italian is non existent. Any help would be appreciated.

Loot To Boot, only seems to have the A side tracks but not the B side, Courage and All Right. these are the ones I was trying to find.

I know their reputation here isn't too great, but this kind of project to me makes them a worthwhile thing for me... it does seem to pay off to put out this stuff in such rather thorough compiled forms, so I still wonder why those who keep the masters and own the rights don't see the least bit of interest in releaseasing it themselves.

I was just doing some investigating regarding the Epic LP "Illinois Jacquet And His Orchestra", and a google search led me to the above post. I think that Fresh Sounds made some discographical errors with regard to the personnel on these sessions (including the final listing above, which includes the alternate takes issued later). Right off the bat, you can see that Roy Eldridge was mentioned initially in their comments as being involved, yet he is left out when the personnel are actually detailed. There are other errors/omissions, also.

Fwiw, here are the correct personnel according to the LP's back cover:

On "Satin Doll" and "Pucker Up": Illinois Jacquet,Ernie Royal,Roy Eldridge,Matthew Gee,Leo Parker, Sir Charles Thompson, Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Rowser,Jimmy Crawford.
