md655321 Posted October 14, 2007 Report Posted October 14, 2007 I bought this download last night for the princely sum of £3.45. I thought that was a fair price considering I've bought pretty much everything Radiohead have put out and have seen them live twice! I managed to extract the files and convert them into AAC at 320kBps for the iPod and for a burn. I'll make a nice (recyclable ) slipcase and burn it again onto a printable CD-R. It's impressive stuff but still feels like they're scrabbling to get out of the post-Kid A shake up. I'm not sure if I'll go for the big box. I'm very much into aesthetics and it'll certainly look nice on the shelf but given that I only listen to rock music occasionally I'm wondering if it will be unnecessary. Now if someone can tell me the SQ will be better..... that's a different story. Why convert the mp3 files to AAC? Doesn't ipod handle mp3? yeah but the bigger files sound better! Um, no they don't. Not when converted from smaller files. You can not regain that lost information, in fact you are just losing more information. Quote

sal Posted October 15, 2007 Report Posted October 15, 2007 This is an EXCELLENT Radiohead album. I know that pretty much everything they put out is quality stuff, but this one is really standing out for me. They seem to have gone back to basics.....the sound is much simpler than their more recent material, yet the songs still have alot of depth. Really digging this. Quote
Rob C Posted January 11, 2008 Report Posted January 11, 2008 I've never been a huge Radiohead fan--liked 'em, never really loved 'em. I never downloaded the MP3 for In Rainbows. But when I saw the newly released CD version on Amazon for $8 I couldn't resist checking it out (after having seen the record appear on many year-end rock top ten lists). I'm on my second listen right now, and I think it's truly great, definitely one of the best rock records I've heard in recent years. And I don't know how the sound quality was for the downloads (not wondeful, I'm sure), but the CD sounds terrific to me--a lot better through my halfway-decent system than most modern pop records. I'm no audiophile, but this sounds very clear and present to my ears. I see that the CD is selling well. I have to say, I doubt that I would have been as likely to pick this up without all the hype surrounding the downloads (and subsequent opportunity for the record to show up on all those top ten lists BEFORE the CD was released!). I wonder if other consumers are similar in this regard. And I wonder if this effect will be considered in all the hullabaloo about the business model of this release! Quote

BruceH Posted January 15, 2009 Report Posted January 15, 2009 I took the delightfully anachronistic route of buying the album in a physical store. I think it was worth it. It happened to come out right around the time I was belatedly getting into Radiohead. (Nowadays it usually takes me a few years to notice a group, as I stopped paying any sort of close attention to rock in about 1984.) Quote

Disc 1 being the original album, 2 the b-sides and related tracks, and the 3rd being a DVD. Spectacular news. I'm 100% sure I'll get the expanded versions of The Bends and OK Computer, and if I can ever find it really cheap (used), maybe even their debut. Quote
BruceH Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Their debut is the only album of theirs I don't have, but I'm not sure I need the 3-disc version. Quote

And if it weren't for "Creep", you wouldn't even need the 1-disc version. Copies can be had for $4 in many used stores - just keep your eyes out. Quote
sal Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 Nice idea for the reissues! Hopefully they'll be reasonably priced. Radiohead is one of the great "rock" bands of these times. Quote

Soul Stream Posted January 16, 2009 Report Posted January 16, 2009 I don't think this will work as a "new model" for bands that aren't already well established. Remember, Radiohead has had full record company hype/promotional support until now. The fan base is already built on the shoulders of the record company's work. A new up and coming band, unsigned, telling people to pay what they want for the downloads...well, the verdict is already in...they don't want to pay. That's what has got us here in the first place. Rooster_Ties Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 (edited) Interesting they're splitting up "I Might Be Wrong" and "Com Lag" and putting some (all?) of those tracks on the bonus CD's to these last three albums. (Of course, that's only cuz I finally bought "Com Lag" last year, finally.) Haven't even gotten the first three extended versions yet, but eventually I'm sure I'll get 'em all ('cept maybe the very first one). Edited June 23, 2009 by Rooster_Ties Quote
