I agree that this is a terrific session but the Ronnie Ross/Allan Ganley is excellent also. This is one of the better of the Collectables 'twofers'.

However on some of these 'twofers' they had to omit tracks in order to get two albums to fit onto a single CD - the Lars Gullin release comes to mind as being one of those, but I'm pretty sure that both the Joe Castro & the Ronnie Ross/Allan Ganley sessions are in their entirety. Has anyone seen a track list for these two new releases so that I can check this? If there are additional tracks then I might be tempted.

I'm not sure if the master tapes still exist. There seems to have been a fire at the Atlantic Studios where most of the tapes were burnt. Anyway, the two unissued tracks were not on the earlier Collectables twofer (which combines "Philly Joe's Beat" with "Philly Joe Jones and Elvin Jones Together"). But that would not even have been possible, due to time limits.

Collectables can never add bonus tracks because they don't make the reissues from the original tapes (if they excist at all). Best they can get are the LP masters (copies).

The Patty McGovern features arrangements by Thomas Talbert. These were done around the same time as his "Bix Fats Duke" album. Previously available on cd on a very hard to find Norma label release. The original vinyl always seems to go for many $ when it turns up on ebay. I just listened to this cd again, very fine small group arrangements prominently featuring Barry Galbraith, with some nice contributions from Joe Wilder.
