montg Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I was listening to 'Time Out' last night. One of the first jazz CDs I owned, so it's hard to hear it with fresh ears sometimes--but it's still enjoyable after many years. I have the Carnegie Hall live date from the Brubeck group, which I don't like as well (Brubeck seems too get stuck in those repetitive figures a little to often for me). I'm wondering if any dates, beyond 'Time Out' stand out as favorites and come recommended. Thanks Quote

jazzbo Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 (edited) My two favorites were records that my parents had when I was a kid, but even beyond the sentimental aspects, these are excellent albums, and good places to go after Time Out. . . . Hot Ptah Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Brubeck has so many albums that any list will be subjective to some extent. I have not heard all of his albums by a long shot, but here are some that I have really liked. Brubeck Plays Brubeck (solo piano--a real eye opener for me as to what Dave is capable of) Jazz at Oberlin Jazz Goes to College Jazz at the College of the Pacific Park Avenue South: Live at Starbucks (despite the Starbucks connection, this is my favorite of the several albums I have heard by his recent quartets) Brubeck and Rushing Brubeck and Desmond: The Duets (1975) Quote
GARussell Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Like Lon, I recommend the follow-up to Time Out called Time Further Out. Quote
kh1958 Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 Bravo Brubeck and Buried Treasures, both recorded at Mexico City concerts in 1967, near the end of the group's existence, are two of the best. Quote
paul secor Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 One that's somewhat overlooked is Brubeck & Rushing. Brubeck is more relaxed than usual; there's some good Desmond - always the best part of Brubeck's records (IMO); and the wonderful Jimmy Rushing is on board. Brubeck isn't the center of attention on this one - to me, that's a good thing. Quote
Kalo Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Another vote for Time Further Out. Way back in highschool, I remember playing this one even more than Time Out. Quote
Alexander Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 I second (third?) the recommendations for "Time Further Out," which I just listened to recently, as a matter of fact. Great album. "We're All Together Again (For the First Time)" is great, too. This is a live album featuring Desmond AND Mulligan. Great stuff! I also enjoy the Brubeck/Rushing album... Quote
Kalo Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Good one! The cover was a cross-promotion for some new shade of lipstick as I recall. Quote
Alexander Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Yeah! Great one! Even more than Brubeck, I love Desmond on these albums. He had such a wonderful tone... Quote
(BB) Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Even more than Brubeck, I love Desmond on these albums. He had such a wonderful tone... It took me a while to realize the only thing I really liked about Brubeck was Desmond, Take Ten probably gets the most play. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 If you love Desmond check out the early quartet stuff on Fantasy (both live and studio). These are my favorites. The early Columbia material has not been reissued properly. Quote

felser Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 (edited) I like most of the Desmond stuff quite a bit, but I'll tell you what I consider the great underrated Brubeck albums - the ones with Gerry Mulligan. Try 'Live at the Berlin Philharmonie' as a starting point. Edited September 21, 2007 by felser Quote
AndrewHill Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 If you only own Time Out, you may want to condsider picking up the box set 'For All Time' which includes, 'Time Further Out', 'Time In', 'Countdown: Time in Outer Space' and 'Time Changes'. Its good value at about $30 and I don't think three of these titles are available for individual sale. Quote

Tom Storer Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Another vote for "All Together Again For The First Time"--Brubeck, Desmond, Mulligan, Jack Six on bass, and the great Alan Dawson in the drum chair, a worthy successor to Morello. I wore that sucker out when I was in high school. Also "All the Things We Are" from 1973 or '74--Brubeck, Jack Six, Roy Haynes & Lee Konitz on "Like Someone in Love"; Anthony Braxton replacing Konitz on "In Your Own Sweet Way"; both Konitz and Braxton on "All The Things You Are"; and then a trio of Brubeck, Six and Alan Dawson playing a medley of Jimmy Van Heusen tunes (originally side 2 of the LP). And of course those early-50's college albums, before the arrival of Gene Wright and Joe Morello. Some of my favorite Desmond, when he had a lot of youthful heat that later melted into his more wistful lyricism. Quote

JSngry Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 Glad to see another fan of ...Eurasia. For some reason, that one has a little more "depth" than a lot of the others. Entirely subjective, I know, but hey... Quote
