Daniel A Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 It looks pretty solid to me! Is it frame rust, or body? Surely you can get some new sheetmetal! Just back from a 700 km drive! It's frame rust, unfortunately, and it will be too expensive to fix. (It's the cause of death for most cars in these parts of Sweden; the road salt which is used during the winter is the main reason for the corrosion )The car cost me 400 Euro, so spending that much or more on repairs at this stage seems like a bad deal. I agree with you about the 240 series, Peter. Mechanically, the construction dates back to the 60s; it's almost always possible to fix it if it breaks down. Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted September 15, 2003 Report Posted September 15, 2003 BTW that 65 Coupe De Ville on ebay is a fine specimen. What about the Snoop DeVille? Quote
Daniel A Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 Well, the Volvo is gone now... I sold it cheap to a young man of the age of 19, who I presume will try to keep it running for another year. If I've been less visible on this board for the last month, it's partly because I've spent a lot of time with the car I bought a couple of weeks ago... a 1985 Mercedes. Still a Volvo guy at heart, I always had a penchant for this model. So weekends and the occasional afternoon has been spent at spark plug, oil and filter changes, cleaning, polishing, waxing, fixing the upholstery, etc... Quote
Daniel A Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 And oh, yes, I've fixed the loose rubber on the front bumper now, too! Quote
BERIGAN Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 And oh, yes, I've fixed the loose rubber on the front bumper now, too! Daniel, glad you found a new love!!!! Is the Mercedes old enough to get reproduction parts, or is it Mercedes only for the parts....are they as expensive over there(parts) as they are here in the states???? Gonna join a Car club??? Quote
BERIGAN Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 My First car, my Grandma's 1969 Chevrolet Impala Convertible! (scanning a Polaroid from the 80's = crap image)I started driving it in 1983....Now you have to understand my Grandma couldn't drive, but she didn't let that stop her! She drove it till the day she died in 1979, at the age of 83! She missed an offramp once with my Mom's sister in the car, and BACKED UP to get back to it! Mom's sister was sure we were out to kill her by letting Grandma drive her...so my point is that it had a hard life, she ran into curbs, ALL the time, got the car wedged against the side of the garage many times, Dad had to put box springs in front of the garage wall to keep her from going thru the wall....she couldn't hear well so she always raced the engine when she got it to start....she never admitted fault to any of her many minor fender benders. Always the other guy! Why did we let her drive??? She was not one to give up anything!!!!! Bondo from the doors back, about an inch thick in places. So after she passed, Dad kept it mainly since it was a convertible, and ran like a top. So We got the front end fixed up. And I got to drive it at 16. And drove the hell out of the 350. Duel exhaust, rebuilding the carb, and that thing would keep up with most anything away from a light in the mid 80's(How times have changed, Toyota trucks would run away from it today) Put a new top on it, new interior, but never got to the body. Had two people hit me within a month, didn't even get to fix it before hit again...so it got a new bumper and fender, but that was it...even though it was a Chevy, no repo parts, no web to look for them, so I finally sold it one day when I was a bit cash strapped, kids father owned a body shop, made it a mild custom , but it looked sharp, and deserved a calmer life....I doubt any one car has been more used, and abused....(I always made sure the oil was topped off, since I got on it every single day I owned it )wonder if it is still on the road???? Quote
BERIGAN Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 Won't bore you with the story behind this car, my 1966 Dodge Monaco...had a beautiful all black interior, had it for a year, and then some dope turned in front of me, totalling the car, at least in the eyes of the insurance company!!! Couldn't buy it back either, was sold at a dealer only auction.... Quote
Daniel A Posted October 24, 2003 Report Posted October 24, 2003 Couldn't buy it back either, was sold at a dealer only auction.... A sad story... sometimes it seems that you're better off with a car in as terrible condition as possible; the insurance companies are mostly going strictly by the list. Is the Mercedes old enough to get reproduction parts, or is it Mercedes only for the parts....are they as expensive over there(parts) as they are here in the states???? There are plenty of reproduction parts available over here, even for newer cars than mine, so don't have to bother with the Mercedes dealers, where many parts have been discontined anyway. As if it wasn't enough, a week ago an old friend offered me to have his 1975 Mercedes 350 SE for free! He hasn't ben using it for a few years, and it needs some fixing, but it's more a matter of time and effort than money. Against better judgement I accepted his offer! As I have no garage to put it in - I even park my other car on the street - I've made an arrangement with the uncle of a friend, who coincidentally has a big farm with a suitable barn for winter storage of old cars outside the small town where the car was, to keep it until the summer when I can start to work on it. So I'm now the owner of no less than TWO old Mercedes. I strongly suspect that I'll have to let the 350 go before soon anyway; a V8 engine craving leaded high octane leaded doesn't appear to be what either my wallet or the environment needs. Hopefully I can at least make enough money from selling it for a few months worth of CD and LP purchases. Quote
Aggie87 Posted January 21, 2004 Report Posted January 21, 2004 (edited) Talkin' about J.C. ... Talkin' about People... Talkin' about Luny Tune... Talkin' about Love... Talkin' about an old Cowhand... Talkin' about Fahrvergnügen! Just recently purchased a 2002 Volkswagon Passat, and have really enjoyed it so far! It's got a small-ish 1.8L turbo, but with a standard transmission and ALOT of get up and go, and is alot of fun to drive, whether just a trip to the grocery store, or a longer drive up to Austin to browse at Tower Records. It's definitely an upgrade from my previous car, a '91 Fiat Tipo. I don't believe Fiats are even available in the U.S. anymore. Anybody else have one of these, or driven one? I used to drive an older VW Passat when I was in high school (79-83) in Germany, though the car itself was probably vintage '75-76 or so. [editor's note: We used to use the bumper of this car to open beer bottles. This was back when bumpers were actually a physically separate part from the body of the car itself.] They have DEFINITELY improved in quality since then. This is what mine looks like, thought it's light green instead (and still needs window tinting). [editor's note #2: the previous note about opening beer bottles on car bumpers is not to be construed as a recommendation that anyone else ever attempt to do this, if you even have a detached bumper nowadays! This was a long time ago, and usually done on camping trips and other high school-type gatherings - NOT during a night out on the town! ] Edited January 21, 2004 by Aggie87 Quote

BERIGAN Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 (edited) Gosh, this thread has been resting for too long!!! This is my first "Ford" a 1979 Mark V Continental. (The word Lincoln is not on the car) Got it last May.400 C.I. 2 barrel, yet the mileage is no better than my '71 Cadillac with a 472 4 barrel! White leather seats, most comfortable seats I have ever sat in, in a car that is.... I have since found hubcaps......need to replace top. Edited March 27, 2005 by BERIGAN Quote
BERIGAN Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 (edited) Well, sold the 1970 Buick Wildcat last year. Loved it, but really hated feeling I was running the miles up on it.(Had 54,000 when I sold it) Someone offered me 4K for a 4 door, so I had to jump at it. Miss it though! So, I bought a 1969 LeSabre soon afterwards! Not nearly as nice, 102,000 on it. Seats need to be recovered, top is crap, a little rust under it. But, mechanically, it is great! And only cost $1526, (Ebay again!) the little buick 350 4 Barrel(quadrajets rule daddy-o!) gets up to 20 MPG, which is nearly double what the Mark V above gets! Hope to be able to fix 'er up someday. catesta Posted March 27, 2005 Author Report Posted March 27, 2005 (edited) B, the Mark V looks straight. I looked at a 74 Mark IV with a 460 recently but passed on it since I'm going to move. I'll wait until after I re-locate than resume the hunt for a Mark, Electra 225, Riviera, Coupe De Ville, or another Eldo. Edited March 27, 2005 by catesta Quote

Didn't even know it existed. Some beautiful, beautiful Caddies here. Along with some other greats. I recently found this on a UK site for sale; I'd have it tomorrow if I could. Quote

BERIGAN Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 (edited) Quit badmouthing Edsels!!!! Ok, they weren't pretty, but they are now worth some money...I dig those crazy dashes...wasn't just Chrysler that did the pushbutton transmisson...and the drum like speedo, neato! Shawn Posted March 28, 2005 Report Posted March 28, 2005 One of my first cars was a 1973 VW Beetle (just like the one in the pic below, same color). I had a love/hate relationship with it, in the 3 years I owned it, I think I replaced every part on the car! If I remember correctly, I bought it for $1000 and by the time I got rid of it, I had invested another $1700 in parts and labor....did I mention they picked the perfect color for it? Lemon.... Quote
