BERIGAN Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 (edited) Ah yes, the Buick Nova! Good cars....Rusty floorboards show up even in Atlanta. I saw a Pretty, Full size Buick Convertible a few years back, but seeing the ground underneath when driving down the road made me pass on it! Even at 800 bucks! Peter Johnson Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 My first car! Yes, a four-door Corvair! Two-speed automatic transmission, rear engine, no seatbelts; got it in 1989 with about 42,000 miles on it. Previous owner had been hit by a bus, got spooked, and garaged it until I came around. It was pretty exciting to hit 70 on the highway; with the rear engine, the nose began to lift like an airplane!!! After about a year, I traded it in for what has been one of the two best cars I've ever owned, a 1972 Volvo p1800: Quote
ralphie_boy Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Love that Volvo Peter! I used to live down the street from some guy that had one sitting on blocks. I begged him to sell it, but he wouldn't part with it. Quote
ralphie_boy Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 I'd get a girlfriend, not a TT. There is a joke in here somewhere. Nice ride rb. No, I'm serious Quote

Dan Gould Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 That's the one. Dad had a 924, but this was the one I thought was so cool. I did get to drive one, once, when I was parking cars at my neighbor's wedding. The most fun I ever had, even if it was only about 1000 feet that I drove it! Quote

Daniel A Posted September 12, 2003 Report Posted September 12, 2003 (edited) In 1991, while I was still 17 years old (18 is the minimum age to get a driver's licence in Sweden), I got a 1970 Volvo 164. It was mainly because my parent's car was an automatic and I wanted to have licence for a manual, so I had to have a manual car for gear-shifting practice... but that particular model had been a favorite of mine since I was very young. The condition was terrible; a lot of rust, and the engine was rather worn after 300.000+ kilometers, but somehow it never failed completely. I had it until 1997 before it was stolen and wrecked (I didn't have any keys to the doors, so I kept it unlocked for six years). The 3-litre 6-cylinder engine was wonderful, allthough the double Zenith-Stromberg carburettor was a pain to adjust correctly. Here's a picture of it: Edited September 12, 2003 by Daniel A Quote
Daniel A Posted September 12, 2003 Report Posted September 12, 2003 My next car was a 1977 Saab 99 which I shared with a nighbor, one of the ugliest cars ever built. Like a go-cart to drive, and tecnhically rather advanced. For the last three years I've had a 1975 Volvo 244 GL. Unfortunately I don't think it will pass the inspection this year. Too much rust... It looks like it will never become a "veteran car". In Sweden 30 year old cars are relieved from road tax, because they're regarded as mere enthusiast's cars. So I'll never be able to pull off the joke: "By the way, do you want to have a look at my veteran car? It's right here outside!". The Volvo 240 series are not exactly looked upon as anything special here... Quote

Peter Johnson Posted September 12, 2003 Report Posted September 12, 2003 For the last three years I've had a 1975 Volvo 244 GL. Yay! Dan, I'm still driving (or rather, my wife drives daily) the 1987 240 my parents bought new...I really like that series--it's a fairly bulletproof (helpful here in Philly, LOL ) model. In fact, in my family, since I was born, we have had a '71 142 '77 244 '87 240, 89 '240, and most recently a '92 960. I guess my parents finally had to get something with more than four cylinders! There's just something about the 240... I think it's a love it or hate it thing. Quote

Folks either swing one way or the other...well, you know what I mean! I know what you mean, I think it has to do with what I was raised around. My dad had big cars, but also had interest in sports cars as well. He usually kept an Alfa Romeo, Lancia, or Fiat around for fun. BTW that 65 Coupe De Ville on ebay is a fine specimen. Quote
