catesta Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 (edited) It seems to me we might have had a car thread over at the BNBB. Either way, I thought it would be cool to start one here. The discussion between Weizen and jazzypaul inspired me. Post pictures and discuss cars you have, had, want, or hate. Like Berigan I'm a big fan of classic American cars, but I also have a soft spot for some of the imports. I don't have my old Caddy anymore, but have been shopping the market for another. These are some of my favorites. 72 Cadillac Eldorado 67 Cadillac Coupe De Ville 74 Jaguar XKE 76 Triumph TR-6 Edited September 10, 2003 by catesta Quote
sidewinder Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 How about this travesty-on-wheels - Sinclair C5, en-route from Lands End to John O'Groats. Amazing what can be achieved with a washing machine motor. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 I drive a '99 Plymouth Voyager. I didn't want to get a mini-van, but I needed something to haul the organ around in. I actually like the car a lot, though. Drives great. Quote
catesta Posted September 10, 2003 Author Report Posted September 10, 2003 I bet one of these would haul an organ just fine. B) Quote
wesbed Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 My car is on my avatar. Hehe... Quote
Peter Johnson Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 Man oh man is this a subject near and dear to my heart. Catesta, I couldn't agree more with the following choice 74 Jaguar XKE as one of the sickest designs ever. I'll throw the following out as one of times car designers have gotten something RIGHT in the last five years: 98 Jag XK8 It's very derivative without being a mockery. Unfortunately, I hear (but even more unfortunately, I don't acually KNOW ) that the handling/spirit is not as derivative as the skin... Must drive both of these cars someday!!! Quote
catesta Posted September 10, 2003 Author Report Posted September 10, 2003 Peter, the new XKE is indeed beautiful car. I had not heard that about the handling. I can however vouch for the older models, a family member had a 1970 XKE that drove like a dream. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 That 1998 Jag looks a lot like an Alfa Romeo model from 1965 or so. . . beautiful cars (both of them). The favorite cars I ever owned, in the seventies, were a 1967 Camaro (didn't look great but ran great and was the closest thing to an Italian car I ever had before I had an Italian car!) and then a 1964 Alfa Romeo Spyder. This was a great car, it had been uglified for racing (i.e. bumpers removed and replace with homemade, etc.) but man a beautiful handling and riding convertible with a detachable hardtop that I loved to drive, drove it cross country several times, and it was a great car. I replaced that with a series of motorcycles, and then my final car was a 1966 Belair wagon, so I could haul drums around, straight six with three on the tree. Still have that one though it hasn't been running in about four years and is now mainly a storage space. A real trooper of a car! Quote
jazzbo Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 (edited) This was my real love though. . .had a bike just like this one for about nine years and many many many miles. . . just this bike, no car til the final two years (the Belair wagon). My wife gave me an ultimatum: I could live with her or I could have the bike. I THINK I made the right choice, living with and then marrying her. BUT the bike remains in my garage. . . for thirteen years now, gathering dust, but it makes me feel better knowing it's there! Edited September 10, 2003 by jazzbo Quote
catesta Posted September 10, 2003 Author Report Posted September 10, 2003 Lon I love those Alfa's. I had a silver 74 GTV, it was a hand me down from my dad. I could dig a Spider right about now. Quote
ralphie_boy Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 Here's my ride. My wife calls it my "midlife" crisis. I told her if I was having a midlife crisis, I'd get a girlfriend, not a TT. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 Damn, Lon--this is freaky!!! Here's a picture of me and my (recreational) ride--a 1972 r75 (sorry for the size)!!! This is on a trip my wife and I took from Philly to Kentucky & back last May. Glad I'm not the only one here who loves horizontally-opposed cylinders! Quote
catesta Posted September 10, 2003 Author Report Posted September 10, 2003 I'd get a girlfriend, not a TT. There is a joke in here somewhere. Nice ride rb. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 Man, I love those Audis. . . first time I saw one I stopped in my tracks and my wife laughed! Peter, yeah, those big old tractor-like Beemers. . . just nothing like 'em! Quote
Peter Johnson Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 Yeah, Lon--they may look like tractors, but if you have a 90/6 like the photo you posted, you know all too well that you can leave the squids on their hondayamasuki ninkjas in the dust with a mere flick 'o the wrist! Love the TT ragtop as well! Quote
Ed S Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 After getting hooked into leasing for a number of years (1 car each for me and my wife) - I decided get out of leasing and buy. In 98, I bought a new Dodge Stratus which I've paid off and still have. Last year, when my lease expired on my mini-van, I went out and paid $5000 cash for a 1996 Chrysler Town and Country mini-van. Great vehicle. Power everything, the air conditioning works and it has a fabulous stereo system with a CD player. Mini-vans come in very handy for driving the kids around to various athletic events, camping etc. I love this car and am SO glad that I'm not paying for 2 cars. Quote
The Mule Posted September 10, 2003 Report Posted September 10, 2003 Always been fond of muscle cars, myself. My dad had a 1967 Cougar much like this one: Then he bought at 1975 Firebird Esprit, which became MY first car. My old man charged me full Blue-Book value on it too, but I didn't care. I LOVED that car... Quote
Ed S Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 My first car. Well I had one just like it. My brother and I paid $150 for it in 1977 or 78. It's a 1961 Dodge. After that one crapped out, I subsequently picked up 2 others over the years. I had one as recently as 1995. After my first son was born, my wife "helped me decide" that I did not have the time to maintain the car any longer and that I needed something more reliable. Actually, it was a pain in the ass and I'm glad I got rid of it. More money to buy CDs! Quote
BERIGAN Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 (edited) Mule, love those Cougers! Ed said.... It's a 1961 Dodge. After that one crapped out, I subsequently picked up 2 others over the years. I had one as recently as 1995. After my first son was born, my wife "helped me decide" that I did not have the time to maintain the car any longer and that I needed something more reliable. Ed, one doesn't own a Chrysler if they care about reliability! Ask the man who owns one! I had a 1966 Dodge Monaco, it was pretty darn nice, till an idiot made a left hand turn in front of me and totaled it!!! He had no insurance of course...bad drivers rarely do....I then got a green lemon, a 1973 4 door Chrysler New Yorker. 440 C.I. Pretty fast for a 5,000 pound car! It only had 65,000 miles, and was owned by a little old lady who only drove it to church! She had a stack of receipts like you wouldn't believe. I payed 1,400, and I was robbed! It has cost me quite a bit of money since 1999. The car has no doubt sucked since it rolled off the assembly line. We have had to have it towed many a time. I "gave" it to my Dad last year. I should have given him some money for taking it off my Hands. Something always is wrong with the car. Engine and trans are bulletproof, but everything else has gone out. Here is the butt of the car, the front is just too ugly! Oh, that is My Mom's 69' Electra (white) and My Dads 68 Wildcat in front of it. They have both since been sold. Both had over 225,000 miles on them, and were dead reliable. Never towed. Edited September 11, 2003 by BERIGAN Quote
BERIGAN Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 My daily Driver, my 1971 Couple Deville. Got it on Ebay! In fact, this photo is from the ebay listing in 2001. Payed $2750 for it. No rust, 472 C.I. Lots o' Torque! Never gives me no grief. Bought it with 79,000 miles, now it has 114,000. Quote
Aggie87 Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 I don't own a Smart car, but they're all over the place here. They were (at least originally) jointly produced by DaimlerChrysler and Swatch (!). I believe at one point they were going to be sold in the U.S. market, but haven't heard anything lately. The Smart Roadsters are starting to become more common on the street as well: And apparently they've got a new vehicle that I haven't seen yet, but guess will be popular as well, called the "Crossblade" here in Germany: Unfortunately, I'm driving an old, beat-up Fiat at the moment, while the wife gets the nice car. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Those are pretty slick. I'd drive the middle one. Quote
BERIGAN Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Since My First car buying experience on ebay worked out, last year when I saw this 1970 Buick Wildcat on Ebay for sale in Woodstock(Georgia, you all knew that there is a Woodstock in Ga, right? ) I thought I would take a look at it....The guy selling it had gotten it for his 16 year old Nephew...to be his first car! He thought it had a 350 CI engine. Instead, he found out it had a 455 C.I. motor, 370 Horsepower, 510 ft-lb Torque Tires do not stand a chance! He wisely decided it was too much for a 16 year old. An 85+ year old Farmer owned it, it had only 48,000 miles on it! I bid on it that night. He then told me he was glad I won it, because the guy I outbid had told him he was going to use it as a parts car for his Buick Riviera!! Not much would have even interchanged from a 4 door, except the drivetrain.Good thing I don't mind 4 doors. Got it for $2650,(The deals you see on ebay, you never see in the auto traders, at least here in the south) and since has such low miles, just a weekend car cruise car. Do want to take it to a drag strip some day to see what she would do. No digital camera, so scanning a photo loses something, but you get the idea..... Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 My first car... Except mine was a 4-door. 1978 Buick Skylark. The car was great. It only had 30,000 original miles on it but it had lived it's whole life in Michigan so it was rusted out like hell. You couldn't tell by just looking at it, but underneath it was a mess. Started to leak oil like crazy after about 36,000 miles. Then I got in an accident with it and fucked up the passenger side doors. After my foot started going through the floor I had to let it go. I got a 1994 Dodge Intrepid with 76,000 miles. I put another 100,000 on it before I got my van last year. That Intrepid was a NICE car. Quote
