neveronfriday Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 I'm in a bit of a hurry. Search didn't yield anything ... but I suck at searching here ... :/ Does anyone have the recording dates for the Benny Carter "3, 4, 5: Verve Small Group Sessions" (Verve 849 395-2)? Either I'm blind (possible) or they're not in the liner notes. Thanks & Cheers! Quote

J.A.W. Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 (edited) The quartet session was recorded in Los Angeles on June 23, 1954 and first released as Benny Carter Plays Pretty (Norgran MGN-1015) and later reissued as Moonglow: Love Songs by Benny Carter (Verve MGV-2025), but I coudn't find dates for the other two sessions. According to the Penguin Guide (seventh edition, page 268) the trio sides with Teddy Wilson and Jo Jones and the final three tracks on the CD with Oscar Peterson were not released at the time. neveronfriday Posted September 15, 2007 Author Report Posted September 15, 2007 Thanks, Hans! Could it be that another session happened as early as 1947? I faintly recall s.th. like that. But I'm pretty old, so ... Quote
neveronfriday Posted September 15, 2007 Author Report Posted September 15, 2007 (edited) Just because: I'm ripping and tagging a bunch of small group sessions for my MP3 player, mostly going by the recommendations in this thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...;hl=small+group (Thanks for all the recommendations, guys & gals ... they killed my wallet at the time). I think I have 99% of those sessions and many of them I've already listened to a million times, but many others I'm thinking of "studying" these next few weeks. That's what I'm up to, next to hoovering, dish-washing, dusting ... you know, the usual crap one gets stuck with at the weekends. Edited September 15, 2007 by neveronfriday Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 Thanks, Hans! You're welcome. Could it be that another session happened as early as 1947? I faintly recall s.th. like that. But I'm pretty old, so ... I don't think so. At least it wasn't a Norgran date, since that label wasn't founded until 1953. Maybe Norman Granz purchased the recordings, but didn't release them. Anyway, I couldn't find a 1947 Benny Carter date with those song titles. Quote

Still, for some reason 1947 keeps poppin' up whenever I try to dig around those squeaky mental drawers of mine. Probably just a misplaced memory. Thanks again! P.S.: Hey, we should really meet sometime, you know, get one of those Paris weekends (or whatever) together with John, Brownie and Mike. S.th. like that. I'd be game. Anytime these next 24 months ... or so. P.S.S.: This whole project made me realize that I have quite a few but not enough Harry "Sweets" Edison dates. Time to go shopping again. *groan* Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 (edited) I did some more research and found that the Moonglow date was recorded in LA on June 23, 1954, not in March 1955. I found the info in Michel Ruppli's Verve discography. Edited September 15, 2007 by J.A.W. Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 Just found the date with the first eight songs on the CD in the Ruppli discography: they were recorded in NYC on September 20, 1954, and were scheduled for release on Norgran MGN-1025, which was not issued. Quote
J.A.W. Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 ...And I also found the last three tracks on the CD: they were recorded in LA on November 12, 1954 and remained unissued. Quote

king ubu Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 I had most of the info in my files but didn't see this thread... still, I added the additional info from Hans' research and attach it below - it's for all three of Carter's Verve small group discs (excluding the strings dates). It's not a professional smartass file, tunes aren't in session order or anything, but I always found it helpful when making another attempt at going through these great sessions more or less chronologically.benny_carter_verve.doc Quote

Dan Gould Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 This set was probably the greatest bargain acquisition of timeless music I've ever stumbled upon. Someone had sold it to a used books/music store and the inconsequential mark on the disc relegated it to the "BLEM" (ished) section: $2.50 Quote
BruceH Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 Whatever I payed for it was worth every penny and then some. This has to be one of the most played compilation CD's in my collection. Quote

Great! Thanks, Flurin. You're welcome! These small group sessions are terrific, in my opinion! If they'd ever been out in a little box, people here and elsewhere would hold them in much higher esteem (and Carter the instrumentalist, too, I assume - sure, there's still "Further Definitions" and the OJC and Pablo albums, but...) king ubu Posted September 15, 2007 Report Posted September 15, 2007 Apparently I'm the only one who has mixed feelings about some of the music... Well, not quite, if you limit it to "some" (and indeed it0s the "3,4,5" disc that's concerned... both parts of the 3 - why would a date by that line-up *not* be released if everything was fine? - and the 4..., but the rests is great, in my opinion!). Anyway, I look at it as a corpus of material, and as such, it's a great one, all considered! Quote
