Last Sunday I had the pleasure of hearing this remarkably talented young lady in performance for the first time and was completely blown away. She's a true original.

She played a short trio set at the Pony Boy Records Jazz Picnic. It was a beautiful, sunny day and a typical mixed crowd for this type of outdoor show: kids running around, dogs doing their dog thing, people socializing as well as listening to the music...

Everything seemed to go into slow motion and it was utterly quiet when she played her beautiful arrangement of the Lennon-McCartney song "Julia." I don't recall ever being so utterly mesmerized by a single piece of music in this kind of an outdoor, certainly less than "intimate," "party" type setting. Subtlety wins out.

In any case, please be sure to hear her when you have a chance. You won't be sorry.

The 5th Wheel is the latest piece in a continuing collaboration between legendary dancer/choreographer Carmen deLavallade and innovative saxophonist/composer Jane Ira Bloom. It explores the spatial and sonic relationships between a dancer on wheels and a jazz quartet with one musician on the loose. The music based on Bloom's original piece Ice Dancing features a quartet of renowned jazz improvisers including bassist Rufus Reid, drummer Jerry Granelli, and pianist Dawn Clement and is the springboard for Ms. deLavallade's playful and evocative choreography.

Bloom & deLavallade will also appear on a panel entitled “Dance & Music: A Dynamic Dialogue” moderated by critic John Rockwell on Thursday, Sept 27, 6:30 – 7:30pm at City Center Studios, 130 West 56th St. The discussion is free and open to the public.

she plays piano ok - but the voice is somewhat non-existent -

???

She sings a very charming rendition of Tom Waits' "Midnight Lullabye" on "Hush." It's true that she hasn't a "great" voice, but it certainly serves its purpose on this number. She doesn't sing as a rule, at least not on that album, so I don't see why her voice is a factor...

well, it is, because she sings - didn't mean to offend, it's just that I thought the voice was part of the package -
