Grass Roots! That's my favorite Hill, sadly i only own the vinyl copy and don't have the cd version with Jimmy Ponder on the bonus cuts. Still, a real great album that i haven't played in a while. Must pull it out.

And while I like both, I like the earlier bonus material with Ponder even more than the session that was released.

I think Ponder especially, adds a hell of a lot to the date -- and being the only guitar player to grace an Andrew Hill album (at least with Hill as the leader), the session is really a special one in my book. (Doesn't hurt that it has Woody Shaw and Frank Mitchell on it either.)

If all you have is the vinyl of Grass Roots, you really should grab a cheap copy of the CD sometime, if ever you have the chance. ESPECIALLY if Grass Roots is your favorite Hill date -- you'll get earlier "prototype" versions of three of the tunes found on the later (released) session, plus two similarly styled tunes that are otherwise unreleased (best as I can remember).

Huge thumbs up for Grass Roots. I remembering draggin' my feet on this one because this date was advertised as a 'groove' date, which is not the usual Hill bag, but I wisened up and got it before it went out print and Jesus what a great disk! I like Jimmy Ponder's contribution on this one too. Its hard to imagine Hill with a guitar player but Ponder fits like a glove. Can't imagine what those tunes would sound like without Ponder on them.

Black Fire and Judgment would be good ones to try next, but eventually you'll want them all. They are that good, and they all get better with time/repeated listens.

I second Sal's recommendation -- Black Fire and Judgment are the next ones to get.

Smokestack is one of my favorite Hill recordings....a unique gem in not only his recorded legacy, but in all of recorded jazz. However, I usually don't recommend it to people who are still "on the fence" with regards to Hill's music. It seems to be a great next step once you're bitten by the bug!

well, I jumped in head first, getting the Mosaic, after having known but "Spiral" (a so-so album on Freedom, with Ted Curson, Lee Konitz and others in various settings) - I then proceeded listening to all of it chronologically, and love the twin basses and the extremely sharp and smart drumming of Hayes a lot... however, I loved stuff like "Out to Lunch" for a long time before, so I was used to some "odd" sounds...
