king ubu Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 the search function has gotten better with the latest revamp of org, but why does a search for both: "bill evans" and +bill +evans in titles only turn up two hits? (at least it's the same two...) +bill +evans results "bill evans" results something wrong here! Quote
Niko Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 the search function has gotten better with the latest revamp of org, but why does a search for both: "bill evans" and +bill +evans in titles only turn up two hits? (at least it's the same two...) +bill +evans results "bill evans" results something wrong here! and +Evans +Bill +Waltz doesn't give any results which is strange given what the results for +Bill +Evans are (at first sight i would guess it only gives titles starting with "Bill Evans" but...) never saw a similar problem with search in topics (which i always use iirc) another problem while we're at it, the search engine complains about strings containing words shorter than 4 letters like "legends of acid jazz"... that searching for "of" alone is not possible i completely understand, but within a longer string...? Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 another problem while we're at it, the search engine complains about strings containing words shorter than 4 letters like "legends of acid jazz"... that searching for "of" alone is not possible i completely understand, but within a longer string...? That's the problem I don't understand. If you put things in quotes, its not looking for two or three letter words, its supposed to look for the entire quote, verbatim. When the search function was working normally (two "updates" ago) you could put anything in quotes and it worked the way it should. Not anymore. Quote
JSngry Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 Using the drop-down search from the boards upper right menu bar, I searched by "bill evans" and got "Search results limited to first 1000": http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...lite=bill+evans Go figure. Quote
Epithet Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 The whole problem in the initial posting seems to stem from not selecting 'Search entire post' under 'Search Where'. Quote
king ubu Posted September 2, 2007 Author Report Posted September 2, 2007 The whole problem in the initial posting seems to stem from not selecting 'Search entire post' under 'Search Where'. No, I don't think so - I was looking for threads with "Bill Evans" in their title - can't be there's just two of them! Quote
Niko Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 easy way to check is a search for threads with "Evans" in the title... the problem with the short words is, i guess that the search engine searches for a string word by word and then excludes results where words don't appear in their string... thus a search for "ran blake" is still impossible Quote
skeith Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I tried a search today, but was unable to search in the forums - it appears you can only search in Amazon. Quote
Niko Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I tried a search today, but was unable to search in the forums - it appears you can only search in Amazon. the search you were looking for is in the (second) grey bar at the top in the upper right corner (not two lines below where the amazon thing is...) skeith Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 that's the Search I am clicking on but I still get Amazon in the box that opens and my search options area is partially obscured by this. try it and does it happen to you Quote

paul secor Posted September 20, 2007 Report Posted September 20, 2007 I used the search function earlier today & found what I was looking for. Quote

MG i'd have guessed that it comes from the way the page is programmed - that there are layers or a priority between control elements or something and that the guy who programmed it was not really careful (don't know too much about these online programming languages just about visualbasic :-) ) but if you don't have it... strange, i have it and use IE, too; maybe the windows version or something Quote
