Jazzmoose Posted March 22, 2003 Report Posted March 22, 2003 Another request for help, guys, this time a "mixed media" question: One of the things that led me into jazz occurred fairly early in my life, and that was seeing a cartoon that imprinted jazz DEEP in my brainpaths. I would like to know if anyone knows the name, producer and/or studio responsible for this mindaltering animation, and also the artist who recorded the music used as the soundtrack. It's been YEARS, but here's what I remember...the cartoon as I recall was basically a depiction of a journey after death into hell. Fantastic art. That's all I can tell you. The music was a hotter-than-a-firecracker version (at least in my memory!) of St. James Infirmary Blues. Ring any bells out there? I'd love to see this again! Quote
alankin Posted March 23, 2003 Report Posted March 23, 2003 (edited) Was it in B&W? It sounds like the Betty Boop cartoon "Snow White." Cab Calloway does the vocal. Great cartoon! Edited March 23, 2003 by alankin Quote
Saint Vitus Posted March 23, 2003 Report Posted March 23, 2003 On a similar vein, does anyone know where to go to download the clip of the public service announcement on safe driving that had the music of the Jazz Messengers on it? Someone posted a link at the old board a while ago. Quote
alankin Posted March 23, 2003 Report Posted March 23, 2003 (edited) There's an essay on the web on Betty Boop in Snow White. The cartoon, which is from 1933, is the 43rd Betty Boop cartoon appearance and is considered one of the best cartoons ever made. Edited March 23, 2003 by alankin Quote
AfricaBrass Posted March 23, 2003 Report Posted March 23, 2003 I like that old cartoon with Owl Jolson. You know, the one where he wanted to be a crooner, but his father and brothers were all classical singers. I love to singa... About the moona and juna and springa... Quote

As to my question, guys, yes it was black and white. Betty Boop? Well, I guess it could have been; it was long ago enough that I may have forgotten that. And I always thought it sounded like Cab. I'll have to track it down and see if this is it. Hope so! Quote
Simon Weil Posted March 24, 2003 Report Posted March 24, 2003 Did a google search and this came up: Quote Filling out the bill is an old Max Fleicher Betty Boop cartoon, Snow White. It definitely isn't the Disney version -- Betty is dumped down a hole along with KoKo the Clown and Bosco the Dog, and spends some time in "H-E-double hockey sticks" as Cab Calloway sings "St. James Infirmary Blues." It's so brilliant, you hope the Enzian or SOMEONE out there will do an entire Betty Boop festival someday. True, her face is weird, but her legs are nice and she's still the sexiest 'toon going. There's tons more -- some recent Plympton, Hertzfeldt, and some sharp VH-1 parodies, but go see for yourself -- I might be lying, you know. http://www.ink19.com/issues/august2002/scr...eMikesSick.html Simon Weil Quote
