bichos
basel, switzerland, september 25, 1953: a new cd on the swiss „tcb“ label in it´s „swiss radio days jazz series“ vol. 17, is out now. with this concert recording of lionel hampton and his orchestra from his european tour 1953 there are new recordings of clifford brown!! the sound quality is superb! it is a welcome in the rare recordings of this big band of 1953. (to my knowlegde there are only 7 other concert-recordings by hampton on this tour (and only 3 with clifford brown solos!) the répertoire is part of well known hampton features (on vibes and piano) and exciting big band jump. there are solos by oscar estelle, baritone sax, anthony ortega, alto and clarinet, james cleveland, tb, the tenor saxes of clifford scott and clifford solomon and the trumpet section of walter williams, art farmer, benny bailey, clifford brown and quincy jones (he is also on piano because the original pianist george wallington was fired a few days earlier). there is more from this concert in basel on part 2 coming out in autumn this year. keep boppin´ marcel
Dan Gould
That's very cool news, I had no idea that series was still active. They've put out tremendous concerts by Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey and others. BIG
brownie
Thanks bichos for giving us the good news about this release. Looks however that there is no Clifford Brown solo to be heard on that volume
The Magnificent Goldberg
Just got the Paris material with Clifford Scott, which is fabulous, so I'll be onto this one. MG
Big Beat Steve
MG, you're talking about the "Real Crazy" studio sessions issued on Vogue or about the live concert recordings from the European tour (September, 1953) issued on IAJRC LP 31 as well as on various CD's on the Stash and Natasha labels? Christiern
No, although I did allow Don Schlitten to use one cut (w. a Brownie solo) on his International Jam Sessions Xanadu album.

Probably Amazon - TCB says on their website that they're distributed by Amazon (they also mention Borders and Tower... not sure if Tower is still around and no clue who/what Borders is...) The Vogue material - I had an EP back in the day and only recently heard from Brownie that it was out on CD. Hamp isn't someone I've watched assiduously... bichos
part 2 is out now: with a sensationel feature for brownie in a six minute version of gigi gryce´s "gryce suite (a.k.a. brown skin)". sound is good for 1953 and the best of all known recordings of hampton´s historic europe tour 1953. a must!! keep boppin´ marcel
Brad
Is part 2 Volume 18/19? I saw that on Amazon but it's a little pricey at $45. Volume 1 is available at CDU and just ordered it.

Swinging Swede
Thanks for the info! It's pretty astonishing that new Brownie still can be unearthed after over 50 years. I will have to pick up this one eventually. What I really would like to hear though, is the recordings he would have made after 1956. The Magnificent Goldberg
What I really would like to hear though, is the recordings he would have made after 1956. Well, in the early sixties, he would have done Bossa Nova albums for Verve, with Getz. He'd have signed for CTI in the early seventies...
