GA Russell Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 That's an easy one for me. Paul Desmond! Quote
BruceH Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Call me a heretic, but I'm still not overly enthused about both the Anita O'Day and J.J. Johnson sets. I'm starting to believe that both sets, although "complete", suffer under their own weight. Between the two sets, that's 16 CDs. Is that all? Quote
B. Goren. Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 (edited) My vote goes to set #161 - The Complete Blue Note Andrew Hill Sessions (1963-66). Edited August 4, 2007 by B. Goren. Quote
vibes Posted August 4, 2007 Report Posted August 4, 2007 I think I might have to go with the Byrd/Adams set. The Johnny Hodges Verve Small Group set would be up there as well. Quote
shaft Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Hi Impossible to choose just one. My favourites would be: -Nat Cole Complete Capitol Set -Farmer/Golson Jazztet -Turrentine set -Jazz Crusaders set Pleasant surprises: Max Roach set. Lou Donaldson set. /Shaft Quote
king ubu Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 Hard to say... there's none that's in constant circulation, really... but the one I played most often of late, I think, is the Randy Weston Select (particularly disc 3). Quote
Unk Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 I wouldn't have predicted it, but...Django. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 Up again for this thread and any further thoughts.. Quote
ghost of miles Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 (edited) Changes over time, but these days it's probably the Lester Young 1936-47 set. Even though it's music with which I'm quite familiar at this point, it's such an amazing collection of recordings all in one place, and there always seem to be new nuances to enjoy in Prez's playing that I haven't noticed before. (And Loren Schoenberg's notes bring out plenty of detail in both Prez and the other musicians' performances as well.) sidewinder Posted April 17, 2020 Report Posted April 17, 2020 Need to dig that one out for a reminder ! Quote
Jim Duckworth Posted April 18, 2020 Report Posted April 18, 2020 My all time favorites are the boxes dedicated to a record label, and I particularly like the Capitol, Beehive, and Strata East sets. But the one that gets the most play is the H.R.S. set- The Bechet Spanier session is in my all time favorite list;there is some amazing Pee Wee Russell, and the Jack Teagarden/Ellingtonian session is one of all time favorites by him. Other than that it hipped me to the great trumpeter Joe Thomas. sidewinder Posted April 18, 2020 Report Posted April 18, 2020 Hard to pick out favourites but the following still get very regular airplay: Complete Solid State Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Complete Blue Note Elvin Jones Complete Blue Note Larry Young Mosaic Select Big John Patton Mosaic Select Grachan Moncur III Complete Columbia Miles/Gil LP set Complete Pacific Jazz Jazz Crusaders  This is all likely to change as a result of CV listening opportunities. On 06/08/2007 at 4:31 PM, Unk said: I wouldn't have predicted it, but...Django. mikeweil Posted April 18, 2020 Report Posted April 18, 2020 In the long run, they all get played equally often, but if I had to pick one just for groovin' enjoyment, it would the the first discs of the Joe Pass or Gerald Wilson sets. Or some small group Ellington. Quote
gmonahan Posted April 18, 2020 Report Posted April 18, 2020 Tough one. I go back to the Teagarden Roulette a lot (and the Basie Roulettes too). Still like the Herman Philips Select, but really, I like all of 'em. Â Â Â gregmo Quote
porcy62 Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 (edited) Probably Roy Eldrige. Edit: I guess I didn't get the question of the thread correctly, I play all records for pleasure only, I consider myself a "dionysiac" record collector. I would rename the volume knob "intensity of pleasure". Edited April 19, 2020 by porcy62 Quote
Misterioso Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 Coltrane - Complete Sun Ship Session. The first few seconds give me goose bumps every time. Quote
Clunky Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 I’d suggest the first i bought  Complete Blue Note Herbie Nicols  i doubt I’ll ever forget the sense of discovery. Scores of box sets later it still stands Quote

sonnymax Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 Cool. Great music. You inspired me to listen to my non-Mosaic issue. Thanks. Quote
mr jazz Posted April 19, 2020 Report Posted April 19, 2020 The Crusaders set is very enjoyable. Likewise the Basie sets and Gerald Wilson and......ok, hard to pick one. Quote
felser Posted April 27, 2020 Report Posted April 27, 2020 Tyner Tolliver Handy selects. McLean Blakey Elvin big boxes. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 27, 2020 Report Posted April 27, 2020 I do enjoy quite a few of my Mosaics but the one that has been hitting the player most often is the Buck Clayton Jam Sessions. Such great music and it swings like hell. Always brings a smile to my face. Quote
