Dan Gould Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 Anyone else sick to death of ESPN lately? Wasting what seems like hours on this "Who is Now?" stupidity ... Chris Berman's shtick past its sell-by date about five years ago ... and now they consider "American Gladiators" to be worthy of showing, over and over again, on ESPN Classic? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 Only watch when they have a game I want. Otherwise, no opinion. Berman wore thin years ago. Quote
BFrank Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 "Lately"?? It's been annoying for a LONG time. Quote
alocispepraluger102 Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 "Lately"?? It's been annoying for a LONG time. espn's(and fox's) high caffeine sports reporting has been on aloc's do not watch list for some years. he also wishes their live events had a dump button where one could get rid of all the inane graphics. he would pay for that. when aloc wants graphics, he plays a computer game Quote
Aggie87 Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 (edited) Doesn't Disney own ESPN (and ABC)? If so, maybe they're Disney-fying things, making it more personality driven (i.e. "Who is Now", which is truly annoying and meaningless) than content driven? edit - Aggie87 wishes to say Aggie87 doesn't necessarily agree with Aloc. Aggie87 wishes to say that Aggie87 doesn't mind the graphics. When Aggie87 likes live games, Aggie87 tolerates the graphics just fine (Aggie87 wishes to convey that to you). T.D. Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 It's been really annoying for some years, and I quit paying attention a long time ago. SportsCenter is essentially unwatchable. About the only thing I can stand, and that in limited doses, is the Sunday NFL summary (whatever they call the show that goes on c. 7PM Eastern on pigskin Sundays). Judging from the inanity on espn.com, the decline seems to be accelerating, and I've also cut down visits to the website. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 Doesn't bother me. But then, I don't watch it... Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 (edited) Doesn't bother me. But then, I don't watch it... Same here, on both counts. And in my case, the "not watching it" part seems to somehow correlate with the "it not bothering me" part. (And yeah, before anyone says anything, I know that "correlation" doesn't equal "causality" -- so I'm trying not to jump to any conclusions.) Edited July 25, 2007 by Rooster_Ties Quote

If so, maybe they're Disney-fying things, making it more personality driven (i.e. "Who is Now", which is truly annoying and meaningless) than content driven? You are right, and that is another thing that is becoming intolerable - cross promotion between ESPN and Disney films. I can't remember where I saw it, maybe the Fire Joe Morgan website, but I think they did a lot of BS with the last Pirates movie, including lame-ass transitions ... I do have to admit there is one thing they've improved on, and that is the scroll on the right side of the screen during Sportscenter. Its helpful to know when the particular highlights you want to see are coming up. Quote
Van Basten II Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 Only thing i watch is boxing from this network, does not get the network, so i have to wait that a Canadoan channel shows the fight. Quote
sal Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 I just wrote ESPN a nasty letter expressing my displeasure at their presentation of the LA Galaxy/ Chelsea match last Saturday (David Beckham's premiere). I felt like I was watching a sports tabloid show rather than a soccer match. Quote
Neal Pomea Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 I watch it for the spelling bees and poker. Quote
catesta Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 Very rarely watch as a result of being annoyed years ago. Sports guys in general including the local yahoos are a bunch of dorks. I could never understand the watching ESPN 24/7 mentality. Even worse are the jerkoffs high fiving each other while quoting Berman or yelling out shit like "en fuego!". Quote
Noj Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 ESPNews is better. Half hour segments of news, not too many shows with talking heads. Ticker on the bottom makes watching it on mute a good option. No Berman. Quote

Ticker on the bottom makes watching it on mute a good option. No Berman. I agree - ESPNews is better. I used to have it on my old cable network, but switched to a new cable/internet provider who has better package prices and service support. I think that's the only channel I lost that I actually miss. Quote

AndrewHill Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 I watch it for the spelling bees and poker. Me too. I have to admit, I'm a poker watching junkie. I don't even mind watching the same episode four or five times (although we need some more 2007 WSOP installments besides the only two events that they've been playing to death). I was at the WSOP a couple of weeks ago to watch the main event, so I keep hoping that I'll see me on TV . Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 25, 2007 Author Report Posted July 25, 2007 Don't count me as some sort of ESPN addict - but I do want to see highlights and scores especially during baseball season. The problem with ESPNews is that the highlights aren't very thorough. For that you need Baseball Tonight but then you are stuck with idiotic commentators like that failed GM who no other team has even considered interviewing since he got canned by the Mets. Aside from that idiotic Shwab game show and American Gladiators, Classic isn't a bad network particularly for classic boxing matches. Unfortunately that's about the only show on any of the networks with listenable, intelligent commentary. The brand really went downhill when the anchors decided they were more important than the results. Quote
Jim R Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 I just wrote ESPN a nasty letter expressing my displeasure at their presentation of the LA Galaxy/ Chelsea match last Saturday (David Beckham's premiere). I felt like I was watching a sports tabloid show rather than a soccer match. That was just plain sad. Beckham strikes me as a genuine guy with good intentions, but the level of hype is sickening, annoying, and insulting to anyone who really appreciates the game. I watch it for the spelling bees and poker. What... you don't watch the darts tournaments? Quote

GregK Posted July 25, 2007 Report Posted July 25, 2007 i hate espn. i can't watch it at all now. i used to watch baseball tonight nightly (or the following mornings). but now it's unwatchable. i get my highlights from reading the game summaries on cnnsi or fox sports.com; they should just re-name baseball tonight the bonds watch, or game analysis for the obvious-impaired. Kruk and Phillips are useless. Quote
