Shawn Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 Okay, so I'm staying with friends and they have a Mac, I haven't touched one in about 10 years. So a couple stupid questions to start with... What replaces a "right click"? How do I get links to pictures, etc? Can a Mac read documents created in Microsoft Word? many more later I'm sure... Thanks in advance! Quote
(BB) Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 Try option (the button between ctrl & "apple" button to the left of the space bar) click to get images. Microsoft makes a version of word for the mac. Click on the desktop then hit the apple key and the F to do a search for word. Otherwise TextEdit comes on all macs (I believe) and should be able to open a word document. Again click on the desk top and then hit the apple and F keys to do a search for TextEdit, you should be able to click on the icon in the found documents window to open the program. good luck Quote
Christiern Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 If either MS Word or Mariner Write are installed, Mac has no trouble opening up a Windows Word file. Since I always have Word and/or Mariner Write installed, I have never had those files come up in TextEdit, but I think BB is correct. I have been using a Mac for over 20 years and I have never needed a right ckick on the mouse. I am curious to know what program asks you for that. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 I use an Access based internet database for work that requires a right click for filtering. . . I ended up not being able to use my iBook for this database for another reason (there was some sort of three month limit to the use of the Citrix reader it needed, and after that expired I couldn't use the database. As a result I have to lug an agency PC laptop with me to Houston whenever I go as well as my iBook. I never could get around that right click, I had to run reports on the database to find information I would have filtered for. Quote
kh1958 Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 (edited) A mouse with two clickers instead of one is the perfect example of Microsoft's ability to make the simple pointlessly complicated. Annoyingly, when you are left-handed like myself, at some point you have to figure out how to invert the clickers. My Mac seems to always work just fine with a single click mouse--it's an ambidextrous mouse. Edited July 23, 2007 by kh1958 Quote
DukeCity Posted July 23, 2007 Report Posted July 23, 2007 I've never used PC's enought to know exactly what the right-click thing is. But I think that control-click on a Mac will do some of the same stuff. Quote
.:.impossible Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 (edited) As long as your friends haven't customized their controls, Apple+Tab scrolls through programs the same way Alt+Tab does in Windows Apple+Q quits an app Apple+W closes a window Apple+C is copy Apple+X is cut Apple+V is paste F12 brings up widgets F11 shows your desktop F9 shows every window open at any given time Those are the commands you will use the most, I'd imagine. p.s. I think BB meant Control+click brings up the same menu that a right-click would. Enjoy! Edited July 24, 2007 by .:.impossible Quote
Quincy Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 A mouse with two clickers instead of one is the perfect example of Microsoft's ability to make the simple pointlessly complicated. Annoyingly, when you are left-handed like myself, at some point you have to figure out how to invert the clickers. I'm right-handed but when using a PC I use the mouse with my left hand so I can use the numpad with the right. I once inverted the clickers but it threw me off, as it was easier just to right-click with the index, left-click with the middle. My Mac seems to always work just fine with a single click mouse--it's an ambidextrous mouse. I think they've added a more button mouse to their recent desktops. I don't keep up with Mac mouses, being a happy happy iBook & now MacBook owner. I've gotten so used to trackpads, which I wouldn't believed would have happened 10 years ago. Quote
Shawn Posted July 25, 2007 Author Report Posted July 25, 2007 Thanks for the tips! I'm starting to get the hang of this thing...and I'm digging it. Quote

Yeah, my brother has one of the latest iMacs (I have one of the last iMacs without Intel inside). His mouse has buttons on the side, a roll ball, and is always doing things I don't want it to do. I'm just not used to it. I'm sure it is very convenient once you get the hang of it. I am a huge fan of trackpads. I find that I can draw just as accurate a path with my finger as I can with a mouse.
