Big Al
I love it when the media reports that people are going to be arrested, as opposed to waiting until the crooks are actually in jail. Sure guys, let's just give the crooks a head start while we're at it.

Jim Alfredson
That's what I'm talking about. If it is Crawford, it explains that ridiculous tech on Duncan during that series, where he was sitting on the bench laughing.
Guy Berger
Maybe I'm much more jaded than the rest of you, but this doesn't have much of an effect on my opinion of NBA officiating. Guy

ejp626
The NY Times also has a story naming the ref. It turns out that Donaghy and Crawford are from the same high school. Coincidence? Though they are 15 years apart in age, so probably weren't running in the same circles then...
Jim R
Iceberg itself, or just the tip of? I'd say there's a whole 'nother potential iceberg out there, although I have no idea whethere anybody will ever find it: the officiating in the NCAA tournament is clearly rigged to favor the big-name, big-draw schools, and that has been going on for a LONG time. Yeah, there seem to be more and more obvious examples with each passing year. From my perspective as a west coast resident, it's teams like Oregon, Gonzaga and even USC (UCLA is usually escorted through nicely) getting completely screwed over that frustrates me the most. This year, no Oregon player was allowed to touch a Florida player while in the paint. The way the zebras avoid controversy is to call a shitload of ticky-tack fouls against the lower-seeded teams early in the game. Nobody (except the poor coaches, who are basicallly helpless) really notices, and by the time the games are winding down, the lower seeds have foul trouble and/or foul-outs. I've forgotten the numbers now (I posted about it in the NCAA tourney thread), but Oregon was called for something like 35 fouls, while Florida got whistled like 11 times. I think the ratio was almost identical in the USC / UNC game (USC's game was destroyed by foul problems by their best players), and I charted a general trend that went on in the final rounds with regard to all of the top seeds. Like I said, it's been going on for years, but this year it was perhaps more obvious than ever... obvious to me without even going online and digging up the stats. CBS, the sponsors, and the NCAA power elite must be very proud of themselves.

CBS, the sponsors, and the NCAA power elite must be very proud of themselves. it's all about money and tv ratings. i have suspected that the ncaa and tv have subtly been giving marching orders to the refs ffor years. with all the dubious characters around the nfl, it is almost unfathomable that some funny stuff doesnt go on in the nfl, too. even clergy and musicians have gambling problems. why not an nfl ref or coach or two? when money is involved the playing field is never level. slide_advantage_redoux
Today's paper has an article on Tim Donaghy and his history of erratic/antisocial behavior. In one instance he chased a postman down the street, threatening to fire him because the postman accidentally knocked over the guy's recycling bin with his postal truck. He reportedly cut the guy off in his car multiple times and then threatened to have him fired, saying he "knew people". (hmmmm, would they be employed ny the Gambino family by any chance? )
alocispepraluger102
aloc wouldnt bet a nickel on donaghy being alive this time next year. here's thinking maybe some more refs and a player or 2 are involved.
Matthew
No surprise that he worked game three on the Suns vs. Spurs series, that game was officiated so bad, and it looks worse now that this has come out. Bill Simmons has a nice column on this game. This might go deeper than we realize, like, maybe he reached out to other ref's?

Matthew
Stern looked terrible during his press conference this morning, just zero life to him. It's obvious that this blindsided him, and has taken a lot out of him. It'll be interesting to see what happens to Stern if this whole thing gets messier than it is now. I can see him resigning if it does. Then again, the NBA really has no one to blame but themselves. Stern made the decision to squeeze out all those veteran officials way-back-when because he thought they had too much personality, and wanted to replace them with these faceless nobodies, who wouldn't "take the focus away from the players," so the new one are the kind who can't get any respect from players. To mix a metaphor: Stern made this bed, now the chickens are sleeping in the roost with him now.
