Rooster_Ties Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 (edited) OK, this is driving me nuts, I *KNOW* I know this tune from somewhere else -- like I've heard it 100 times before (probably under some other title, I'm sure). I just got Ramon Morris' lone Groove Merchant date ("Sweet Sister Funk", from the mid 70's) in the mail today from Dusty. The name and credits of the tune as it appears on this album are as follows... Track #6: "Lord Sideways", written by pianist Albert Dailey (who is on the date). There's a 30-second clip of one of the sax solos on the AMG review page for this album (<<==LINK -- you'll have to be logged into AMG to be able to play the clip). The clip doesn't doesn't have the head, but the chord-vamp is very clear, alternating between two chords that only alternate about once every 4 bars or so (the chord change is right about the 15-second mark, and then would repeat for like 4 bars before going back to the first chord), and is nearly identical to the chord vamp in the other version I'm familiar with. My hunch is that this is on some Woody Shaw album from the mid 70's, but the only date I can find that Woody Recorded with Albert Dailey is a bootleg from about 1969 (which I've never heard), so that rules that out. I still think it's on some other Woody Shaw album. (And my discs are spread out all over the house, so it'll take me some time to find all of them, and check this out myself). Anybody have this Ramon Morris album? Can you check out the tune, and see if it rings any bells?? Or can anyone tell from the 30-second clip. It's the opening track (and title track) from the Woody Shaw album "Love Dance" -- credited to Joe Bonner, the pianist on the "Love Dance" date. What gives?? I can't swear to this, I'll listen to them all later, but I think the tune is FURTHER duplicated on Art Blakey's LP "Child's dance" (I think it's the title track). And the personnel on that album includes Woody and Ramon! MG Quote

Yes, just listened to all three trax and you're correct. I knew there was some kind of rip-off on that LP This is what Dan Morgentern has to say about "Love dance" in the sleeve notes to the Woody Shaw. "Love dance", by Joe Bonner, is a piece that first caught Woody's ear when he heard it performed by the composer with the Jazz Samaritans in 1970, and again when saxophonist Ramon Morris (a sideman on one of Woody's Contemporary albums) recorded a quintet version of it, which inspired Woody to try it for a larger ensemble. Apart from the fact that Ramon's album is by a septet (though a couple of bods may have sat out for this track), this seems to nail it. MG Quote
