Middle Eastern World Music

Ive recently discovered middle eastern music with Peter Gabriels album called Passion. I really like some of the tracks with the slow percussion work and the turkish flute. Im not too familiar with middle eastern music a lot of what I heard from it I did not like and I thought it was too new agey. Are their any really good artists around making some moody middle eastern music which is 100% instrumental? start me off!

There is another disc on Peter Gabriel's Real World Label called Passion Sources that compiles many of the artists and songs that inspired Gabriel when he created his music for Passion. Grab a copy of that disc and you'll have quite a few artists to start exploring. Most of the middle eastern music I know has vocals, which should not stop you from exploring it.

My first recommendation (with vocals:) Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - Shahen Shah. Just an incredible album!

Let me absolutely second the recomendation of "Rabih Abou-Khalil - Blue Camel" - for both Rabih, and specifically for this album, which is (IMHO) the finest of many great albums from him.

I have yet to find a Rabih Abou-Khalil disc that I did not like. In a similar (oud) vein I would also recommend Anouar Brahem - Astrakan Cafe and Le Pas Du Chat Noir, both on ECM.
