king ubu Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 I just recently got hold of the (now OOP, it seems) Tubby Hayes disc "Mexican Green" - just finishing a first listen, very good one! Inside of the traycard, there's an add with other releases available: Ardley/Carr/Rendell - Greek Variations Costanzo plus Tubbs - Equation in Rhythm Amancio d'Silva - Integration Michael Garrick - Troppo Tubby Hayes & the All Stars - Return Visit! Tubby Hayes Orchestra - 100% Proof Tubby Hayes - Tubbs' Tours Tubby Hayes - Tubbs Tubby Hayes - Mexican Green Mike Taylor - Trio Mike Westbrook - Celebration and of course the two compilations: Various - Impressed with Gilles Peterson Various - Impressed with Gilles Peterson 2 Is this all there is? Anything else not in this list? I did a search here and came up with various related threads (on Tubbs, on the compilations etc) but it seems there hasn't been a general one with the whole list being mentioned, so I figured I'd start a new thread and ask... Also I noted that "Mexican Green" doesn't list the personnel anywhere else except in the original notes (they're mentioned in passing in the new notes, too) - rather crappy... also the typo on the tray ("A Deication to Joy"). sidewinder Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 (edited) Just looking at my stash of 'Impressed' CDs right now, Highness - I think your list is complete. There's strong rumours of a third batch coming out from Universal UK towards the end of the year. Don't hold your breath - based on past comments from them. The titles I have heard mentioned are Harriott/D'Silva 'Hum Dono', Mike Taylor 'Pendulum', Neil Ardley 'Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe' and 'Symphony of Amaranths' and a couple of others I think whose titles elude me.. (I have the feeling one might be Don Rendell 'Space Walk' - his first LP after the Rendell/Carrs). What is really odd is that Sunbeam have just issued the Taylor 'Pendulum' on CD so why Universal choose to reissue it themselves is sort of bizarre (after the thing has been missing in action for 40 years 2 companies decide to reissue it simultaneously !). I would have picked it up but I think I'll hang on until Universal release it (or if Sunbeam issue it on vinyl). The 'Hum Dono', 'Pendulum' and 'Amaranths' were originally issued by Columbia in the Lansdowne Series on vinyl and are rare beasts indeed (especially the Harriott and the Taylor). The 'Dejeuner' was a very rare UK Verve issue - very fine orchestral session indeed with a version of 'Dusk Fire' and a fantastic 'Naima'. 'Amaranths' from 1971-ish also has a great collaboration with the late Ivor Cutler - 'The Dong With the Luminous Nose'. Hope Universal get their act together pronto on this lot.. Oh - and a Vol 3 of the Gilles Peterson is promised too. These are great and I recommend Vols 1 and 2 very much (fascinating sleeve notes with historical background essays too). PS - I've heard so-so reports regarding the sound on some of the Tubbs issues (one of them - '100% Proof' I think - is from a mono master not stereo) but having good LPs the only one I've picked up is the Costanzo. The sound on that one is pretty nice stereo. As you mention, the sleeve notes are microscopic - not the greatest. Having said that I keep seeing them for £5-7 each so they are a bargain. sidewinder Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Ardley/Carr/Rendell - Greek Variations Lovely album. The first part of an Ardley trilogy - with 'Symphony of Amaranths' and the later 'Kaleidoscope of Rainbows'. Neil is certainly missed from the UK music scene. Quote
sidewinder Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 The sound on "100% Proof" is poor to say the least. The music though is great. I was able to run a check on both mono and stereo copies of the original Fontana LP. The stereo rocks but the mono sounded pretty damn good too. I wonder what they did with the CD? Quote

They used the shitty remastering done for the Japanese CD issue, is what they did! Probably. Grrr... Quote
king ubu Posted July 18, 2007 Author Report Posted July 18, 2007 Thanks for all your replies! I have "Greek Variations" only, so far (but I also have a few of the Vocalions plus two of the Rendell/Carr 2CD sets and some stray other british album). I think I've read about the "Hum Domo" reissue here before, but I'm off the computer this very second, will be back tomorrow... Quote
sidewinder Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 (edited) 'Hum Dono' is very much in the style of Amancio D'Silva's 'Integration' album ie. Indo-Jazz fusion with a bit of a psychadelic, laid-back feel. The track 'Jaipur' is featured on one of the Peterson compilations. For a long time the story was that Universal had completely lost the tapes but hopefully now they have recovered a stereo master. Pretty scarce on LP - those LPs that do turn up tend to be fairly trashed. Edited July 18, 2007 by sidewinder Quote
king ubu Posted July 19, 2007 Author Report Posted July 19, 2007 I'll definitely grab "Hum Domo" when I see it! By the way, seems "Mexican Green" was just out of stock at Amazon UK when I last checked, hence I was quick jumping on a good marketplace offer... now it's back there again... Quote
brownie Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 I'll definitely grab "Hum Domo" when I see it! Didn't you get a burn of this from a friendly O. poster? Quote
Head Man Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Hot from the press! The Mike Taylor tribute album - 'Mike Taylor Remembered', by The New Jazz Orchestra is due to be released on 18 August by Dusk Fire records. I bought a copy from the late Neil Ardley many years ago but this version is apparently re-mastered from Neil's original master tapes so should sound even better. I can really recommend it. Further details: Dusk Fire Records Quote

A lost Lansdowne session and a fine one - based on the track included in one of the Peterson compilations. Norma Winstone on vocals ! Quote

Yes, of course Anyway, I'd still buy a good-sounding CD reissue of this great album! (I keep feeling slightly bad having CDRs of albums that come back in print... can't help it...) Quote

sidewinder Posted September 8, 2007 Report Posted September 8, 2007 Great sleeve notes by Dave Gelly on 'Mike Taylor Remembered'. The Mike Taylor original compositions were, by and large, miraculously retrieved by Jon Hiseman from some smouldering scraps in a dustbin after Taylor had deliberately destroyed them. Even more miraculously, they were recreated in orchestral arrangements based on the remaining scraps and Jon Hiseman's own invaluable experience of having lived with the music. Incredible ! Quote
sidewinder Posted September 9, 2007 Report Posted September 9, 2007 The Mike Taylor seems to have disappeared off of the Trunk catalogue. Don't tell me it sold out completely after 2-3 days? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 9, 2007 Report Posted September 9, 2007 I ordered mine through Dusty Groove. Hopefully it'll be in stock soon! Quote
sidewinder Posted September 9, 2007 Report Posted September 9, 2007 (edited) Hope this is just a temporary unavailability and not another 'Boom Jackie Boom Chick' moment. Very strange indeed that the details and sound samples have been yanked completely from 'Ye Olde Trunk-Shoppe'. Fabulous album by the way. Must try not to get totally paranoid on the Mike Taylor front but I also noticed that Sunbeam Records don't seem to have the 'Pendulum' CD reissue listed on their site any longer or in the shop. Might be a good time to pick this one - instead of taking a gample on Universal UK issuing it (or not, as the case may be - possibly a forthcoming Universal issue might be the reason that Sunbeam's version is going AWOL?). I'm not sure I'd put a bet on Universal coming good so time to pick up 'Pendulum' perhaps. Edited September 9, 2007 by sidewinder Quote
