sidewinder
They included a speech recorded by Lucky for a British jazz festival he couldn't attend. Wasn't it a proposed 'Lucky Thompson Convention' at somewhere obscure like Coventry? Don't think it happened in the end.
mikeweil
You may be right - I'm too lazy to read through the booklet ....
JSngry
Hey Sangrey, what was that Lucky record that you played for us in Dallas years back? There was a long monologue on the business and the music was deeply gratifying. Should have been the Candid session: Yep, that's it.
Ted O'Reilly
Just in passing, Lucky's tenor and soprano saxes are both now owned (and played) by Toronto's Pat LaBarbera. He says the tenor is "very dark-sounding"....
Don Brown
No one's mentioned Miles Davis' Walkin' session on Prestige (OJC). That's the one with J.J.Johnson, Lucky Thompson, Horace Silver, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke recorded April 29, 1954.
BruceH
No one's mentioned Miles Davis' Walkin' session on Prestige (OJC). That's the one with J.J.Johnson, Lucky Thompson, Horace Silver, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke recorded April 29, 1954. That's a good one! (But as others here have noted, I haven't heard of a bad Lucky session.)

Tom in RI
Hey Son-of-a-Weizen, I was lucky to pick that one up last fall for $4.00. I have been pretty happy with the issues in this series that I have picked up. When I have seen them they have been pretty cheap. I have one issue on this series, Fletcher Henderson and the Dixie Stompers, where the personnel listed is seemingly from another record they planned to issue, possibly a Don Redman collection.
