Lucky Thompson

The Impulse material - both the trio/quintet material as well as the two ABC albums under Oscar Pettiford's name!

There are two volumes of Lucky T. in Paris in the "Original Vogue Masters" series and also two discs (plus a third w/Sammy Price) in the "Jazz in Paris" series. All good stuff!

Among the best Lucky T. are his dates with Milt Jackson (mostly on Savoy) - I only have some of that, that music hasn't been collected in proper fashion, as far as I know.

The GRP release with Pettiford is "Tricotism" and I'd definitely recommend it if you can find it. I got mine very reasonably through Half.com but you have to be very careful there. They have "Tricotism" listed under the Crusaders' "Royal Jam" and vice versa. If you go that route I'd try and contact the merchant first to make sure you're getting "Tricotism" and not "Royal Jam".

The one I like with Milt is Plenty, Plenty Soul on Atlantic.

Also more than like his "sideman" appearance with Miles.

I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned the wonderful Prestige CD, HAPPY DAYS, which completely combines two early '60s LPs, "Plays the Music of Jerome Kern" and "Happy Days" making for a value-packed CD. Here's a good review from AllMusic:

That's a great one! Man...$100...stuff gets inflated fast when it goes out of print.

Another vote for Lord, Lord Am I Ever Gonna Know?. The opening monologue is rather haunting viewed with hindsight...the session is fabulous as well.

This Fresh Sound CD is also excellent...

Probably because you can get it for just 100$ from a single Amazon marketplace seller? Crazy!

Too bad I missed this one, will keep my eyes open!

I had no idea it was out of print much less priced at that inflated level.

Rather crazy, isn't it? But that seems to be a common development with OOP OJCs and other Fantasy discs now... I'm grabbing fast as much as my bank allows... (Joe Gordon, Gil Melle, Doug Watkins, Sam Jones, Jaki Byard, Don Patterson, Jenkins/Jordan/Timmons, Jimmy Heath, Jaki Byard, and most of Bennie Golson's... and more - crazy! But rather at 10-15$ a pop, not 100!)

I came across this thread looking for some Lucky Thompson recommendations, since I recently noticed, that I have not one recording by him as a leader (shame on me!). I do have the wonderful recordings he did with Milt Jackson in 1956 on Savoy. Further I would like to point to two sideman dates not yet mentioned in this thread:

Jo Jones - The Essential Jo Jones (Vanguard)

Lucky is part of an all star cast also including Emmett Berry, Lawrence Brown, Nat Pierce, Freddie Green and of course Jo Jones; a great set of swinging mainstream jazz

Jack Teagarden - Personal Choice (King)

An excellent 1954 set of Teagarden warhorses with Ruby Braff, Big T, Lucky, Sol Yaged, Kenny Kersey, Sidney Gross, Milt Hinton and Denzil Best

Base line is, if you like one of Lucky's records, you will like all of them - there isn't a bad one.

The best have been mentioned here or in the earlier thread, and you cab alway take a look a the Lucky Thompson Discography by Noal Cohen - I don't take any responsibility for any consequences a visit there might have.

Hey Sangrey, what was that Lucky record that you played for us in Dallas years back? There was a long monologue on the business and the music was deeply gratifying.

Should have been the Candid session:

Very good date with Martial Solal, Peter Trunk, and Kenny Clarke.

They included a speech recorded by Lucky for a British jazz festival he couldn't attend.
