It doesn't bother me. What's funny is when they applaud after the head, as if that was an improvised solo.

I think for many it lets them feel that they are a part of the creative process (and often they are, IMHO). If the audience feels that they can't spontaneously respond it can only serve to widen the rift between audience and musicians.

Just my opinion. :)

Maybe it was the best head they ever had. Wouldn't you applaud too? :rhappy:

As for the topic, I guess I was always under the impression the musicians appreciated the applause.

Maybe. I just all ways wondered about the folks who automatically applaud after every dam solo. No matter how good it was.

7/4 is right, and I have to say it annoys me.

It's on the same level as the obligatory standing "O".

Chuck is right too. Some times it can be inspired.

After a while you end up with musicians who play cliche's because they get the cliche' aknowledgement.

:D

Hey now. :eye:

I appreciate applause, as long as I don't gage/judge my playing according to the (amount of) applause I get or donot get. 'Course I've never played for a really "hip" audience.

I think you should applaud when you find a passage that is quite eloquent but too many crowds are often clap happy and applaud after every freakin' solo, no matter how insignifiant it was.

I think these people like to hear themselves more than listening to the music.

Regardless of musical genre, most people clap after the performance. I think that is done out of custom and politeness, neither of which I have a problem with. What varies of course is the intensity of the applause. If people are moved they will reflect that in their applause. The custom in jazz is to applaud after every solo. I don't have a problem with that because it is the tradition of the music - and more importantly, people will definitely give it up when they are truly moved. Personally I like the custom associated with jazz - I think it fosters more of an engagement between musicians and the audiance.

Shouldn't "After solos you like" be a choice? BTW Audiences get pleasure out of applauding. I've been at screenings of jazz films and seen the audience applaud after great solos.

hey, its not wrong to hear people genuinely going nuts on "Live at Yoshi's" by Pat Martino or VSOP "Live Under The Sky", the crowd reaction on the latter is awesome, like a rock concert. What is dumb is when people clap after a thoroughly written 8 bar bridge or something that's part of a tune and not improvised

You're right, it should have been another choice
