Dmitry Posted July 4, 2019 Report Posted July 4, 2019 In other news - Dutch women go through into the WC final, beating Germans on the way...something that the Dutch men could never do...so they put their women on the front lines instead. Quote
Brad Posted July 6, 2019 Report Posted July 6, 2019 Sounds like the third place match was interesting today, with Messi getting red carded (as was the Chilean player he tangled with). It’s only his second red card ever. Perhaps his frustration finally boiled over. Quote
Dmitry Posted July 7, 2019 Report Posted July 7, 2019 (edited) Yes, it was fine, and it could've been very good. First Alexis was injured and subbed 15 minutes into it, then Messi got shafted shortly before the half-time. The expediency with which the ref showed hm the red card was odd, almost like he was set up. I thought Argentina played their best team-game of the tournament. Messi had some choice words for the Comnebol brass afterwards. Next year Argentina, along with Colombia, will be hosting a new Copa. After that, they are switching to the "every four years" format. Brad Posted July 7, 2019 Report Posted July 7, 2019 Dutch have played reasonably well but haven’t done much offensively. Unless that changes, hard to see how the US doesn’t win. Quote
Brad Posted July 7, 2019 Report Posted July 7, 2019 The Dutch just didn’t have enough offense to come back from that first goal. I think the gap between the US and Europe (not sure about the rest of the world) is closing but whether it’s substantially closed by 2023 is something we won’t know until then. Quote
Dmitry Posted July 9, 2019 Report Posted July 9, 2019 (edited) There is no doubt for me that Brazil was favored by the Conmebol or whoever else was running this show. Messi is 100% right to call it bullshit. Two clear penalties not awarded to Argentina. Edited July 9, 2019 by Dmitry Quote
Brad Posted July 9, 2019 Report Posted July 9, 2019 Such is life. Refereeing has never been perfect. It’s more like art. It’s sometimes better to be lucky than good. As Branch Rickey said, luck is the residue of design. Quote
Dan Gould Posted July 9, 2019 Report Posted July 9, 2019 I'll care about referees swallowing their whistles when faking being fouled is no longer a thing. Quote
Brad Posted July 9, 2019 Report Posted July 9, 2019 I can’t say the first two matches on Sunday were overly exciting. The US was bound to win and Peru was lucky to be there. The evening match was interesting for awhile but ultimately disappointing. Quote
Dmitry Posted July 10, 2019 Report Posted July 10, 2019 We do have at least one true world class player - Pulisic. And, if he does well going forward, McKennie. When was the last time US had one of those?! Yes...never. Quote
Brad Posted July 10, 2019 Report Posted July 10, 2019 They seemed to play well in the first half but less so in the second. I suppose Mexican pressure had something to do with that. Going back to the Copa America for a second, I didn't really understand what Peru was doing after they had a man advantage. At times, it seemed that all Peru wanted to do was knock down people. Quote
Brad Posted July 27, 2019 Report Posted July 27, 2019 Looks like Bale is on his way to China. Meanwhile, the Madrid has been a disaster so far. They’re losing 7-3 to Athletico Madrid. I’m glad I didn’t buy a ticket. Quote

erwbol Posted November 19, 2019 Report Posted November 19, 2019 @mjazzg I hear Big Sam is looking for a club. Quote
mjazzg Posted November 20, 2019 Report Posted November 20, 2019 He may well be but my club are quite happy with their manager thanks. You won't be overly bothered by my hometown team, Reading FC, I suspect. If this is a reference to Spurs, who aren't my club but are 2 miles down the road, then they may well have just done a worse deal than Sam Quote

Dmitry Posted December 10, 2020 Report Posted December 10, 2020 Paolo Rossi died today, only 64. The 1982 Mundial in Spain was the first one I've watched critically as a very young fan, with my grandfather. https://www.goal.com/en-us/news/italian-legend-paolo-rossi-dies-aged-64/xquud7u9e9981en3z9rctoue7 Quote
EKE BBB Posted December 10, 2020 Report Posted December 10, 2020 (edited) R.I.P. For me, it was also the first World Cup for which I learned by heart all lineups. In fact I still can recall a bunch of them: Waldir Peres, Leandro, Oscar, Luizinho, Toninho Cerezo, Júnior, Falçao, Sócrates, Serginho, Zico and Éder. Zico and Sócrates were my idols by then. I also have some remembrances from Argentina '78 and Mario Kempes defeating the Clockwork Orange team, but Spain was different... ... even though I did not attend any of the matches. At that time I was a huge fan of Brazil national team, so I was really disappointed with Italia qualifying for the semifinals and then beating Germany 3-1 in the final. And besides, I have never been very fond of 'catenaccio'. This image of Sandro Pertini celebrating Paolo Rossi's goals is iconic: Edited December 10, 2020 by EKE BBB Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted December 10, 2020 Report Posted December 10, 2020 (edited) I'll out myself as an oldster, then: I remember being allowed by my parents to stay up very late to watch the opening match of the 1970 World Cup in Mexico (Mexico-Italy 0:0). Though at 10, I did not follow soccer that closely yet during the Mexican Cup and the first one I really ate up from start to end was the 1974 World Cup in Germany. By 1982 that enthusiasm had long ebbed off to that of a (very) occasional watcher and sports news reader, though, as other hobbies (including 20s to 60s music and record collecting ) kept me more than occupied. Rossi's name is familiar, though. Edited December 10, 2020 by Big Beat Steve Quote
