clifford_thornton Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Is this the '64 Berlin concert? That's good shit. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 9, 2007 Report Posted July 9, 2007 Guess just track 10 is from that gig. It might be Cameron Brown on bass, but I'll have to look tonight. Quote
king ubu Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 This looks badly like fresh sound uses dime-seeds as their source - all including the unknown track from europe! Quote
king ubu Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 This is my own guess for #10: Thad Jones - cornet Joe Farrell - reeds Garnett Brown - trombone George Russell - piano Barre Phillips - bass Albert "Tootie" Heath - drums and this is the probably correct Newport line-up: Thad Jones - cornet Brian Trentham - trombone John Gilmore - tenor sax George Russell - piano Steve Swallow - bass Albert Heath - drums Sheila Jordan - vocals info taken from: Burt Goldblatt: Newport Jazz Festival, Dial Press, NYC, 1977, p. 269 (see attachment). Don Ellis played his own gig at that year's NJF, too, btw. (Don't have that recording, though... don't know if a recording exists at all.) Quote
king ubu Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 What sucks even more is that the Freshsound chaps were too lazy to check the exact date of the Newport gig - *just* as it was shared on dime initially - can't be a coincidence, no sir! And what about "Around Midnight"... really a bad hack-job, there! Quote
king ubu Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 Is this the '64 Berlin concert? That's good shit. Is that around? You're not mixing it up with the MPS "Beethoven Hall", I assume? (Good shit, too!) Quote
king ubu Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 Apologies for the mix-up, it's not a Freshsound release at least, and RLR is well-known to make money out of traded boots by now... I was mis-lead since the link went to the Freshsound site... but they're uncaring enough to distribute all that shit... Quote
Swinging Swede Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 Not necessarily a mix-up. According to Mr. Nessa it's the same guys behind all those labels. Quote
JohnS Posted July 13, 2007 Author Report Posted July 13, 2007 Intersting issue - I imagine there are sound quality issues here. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 It's possible the source is pre-dime-download. . . . And not everyone has the downloads. . . . Still like to see this on a release that gave the creator(s) a few coins! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 This is my own guess for #10: Thad Jones - cornet Joe Farrell - reeds Garnett Brown - trombone George Russell - piano Barre Phillips - bass Albert "Tootie" Heath - drums Yup. Great session! Quote
JSngry Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 This is my own guess for #10: Thad Jones - cornet Joe Farrell - reeds Garnett Brown - trombone George Russell - piano Barre Phillips - bass Albert "Tootie" Heath - drums Yup. Great session! Some interesting crossover in personnel there to the Heiner Stadler Brains On Fire thing. Farrell, Brown, & Phillips. And Thad would, of course, work with Stadler later on. Not sure if there's a "meaninful" connection, but it's an interesting one, at least to me. Quote
erhodes Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 I have a tape of the '64 session. I do not believe it is John Gilmore on the version of "Round Midnight". IMO, it is not the same session at all. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 14, 2007 Report Posted July 14, 2007 Yeah, all I have for Russell boots is some stuff with Farrell (courtesy DP!), from the above session. I checked my notes, and it's actually from a Paris gig. You know, I've never bought those Brains on Fire records. Maybe next time I see one... Quote
king ubu Posted July 14, 2007 Report Posted July 14, 2007 Paris 64 line-up is: Thad Jones - cornet Garnett Brown - trombone Joe Farrell - tenor sax George Russell - piano Barre Phillips - bass Albert "Tootie" Heath - drums Quote
king ubu Posted July 14, 2007 Report Posted July 14, 2007 Intersting issue - I imagine there are sound quality issues here. If the sources are anywhere near what I've heard, yes, mediocre sound to be kind... but great music, of course! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted July 15, 2007 Report Posted July 15, 2007 My copy of the Paris date sounds rather good, fwiw... Quote
king ubu Posted July 15, 2007 Report Posted July 15, 2007 My copy of the Paris date sounds rather good, fwiw... Yes, Paris sounds more than fine, but this releases pairs the Lenox set with the Newport set, so... Quote
paul secor Posted July 15, 2007 Report Posted July 15, 2007 It's possible the source is pre-dime-download. . . . And not everyone has the downloads. . . . Still like to see this on a release that gave the creator(s) a few coins! For a release like this they should get all the coins. Quote
