Free For All Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Anyone been watching this documentary about crab-fishermen? The Discovery channel has been running it a lot lately. I think it's really fascinating stuff. These are some seriously bad-ass dudes. I'm also amazed that there are any crabs left in the sea with the huge amounts these boats can take. Very interesting series. Anyone here know anyone who does this sort of thing? Quote
GregK Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 yeah I started watching it recently, but man it's hard to sit through the opening. I HATE Bon Jovi. Quote
JSngry Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Dude, it's not a documetary, it's a series! LTB & I have checked it out, and we like it much. We just don't schedule viewings and stuff like that. Also looking interesting is Ice Road Truckers. http://www.history.com/minisites/iceroadtruckers There really is good stuff on TV... Quote
(BB) Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 (edited) Living out here in the NW I have known a lot of people who worked the fishing boats up in Alaska. My wife even spent a couple months on a canning boat. Although nothing like the physical work those guys are doing, most of the boats I have know work 12hrs on 12hrs off for 6 days a week and then even more when when things are really busy. I don't know if the money is as good as it use to be, but about 10 years back I had friends who would bring home $20,000 to $30,000 for a few months work. Granted there were no long term benefits and very little job security. Most of the folks I know had gotten out of it by their early 30's, although a good friend was married to a mechanic who worked till his early 50's. It ain't the easiest way to pay the bills that's for sure. edit to add the smell of one of those boats was enough to put me off eating seafood for a month or two Edited July 3, 2007 by (BB) Quote

Although it's hard to see what that series is doing on the History Channel. History Channel just wants to compete with Discovery now. And you can have a documentary series. There are lots of them. Or am I missing a joke? Quote
Joe G Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 Just by luck, I did catch an episode of Deadliest Catch, and was pretty riveted by it. Even moreso by a teaser for the next episode showing some monster waves crashing on deck. Look the f@#& out! Quote
Noj Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 I used to know this crazy kid from Glendale who would spend his summer vacations working on Alaskan fishing boats. He was super skinny and sort of gnarly looking, and his friends nicknamed him "Crack." Quote

Very interesting series. Anyone here know anyone who does this sort of thing? I know a few people who have done a season in Alaska and have come back saying that it ain't worth the money!!!! I'm from RI and this series has a sister series called "Lobstermen" (I believe) that documents the lobster boats that leave from Point Judith (Narragansett) RI. I only watched part of it once, but, it's hard, back breaking, dangerous work. Southern New England loses a few fishing boats each year and most towns have a memorial set up for those who never came back. The best parts of "The Perfect Storm" (the book, not the film) was the material about the hazards of commercial fishing and its history. Quote
catesta Posted July 3, 2007 Report Posted July 3, 2007 I've been watching "Deadliest Catch" since it started. I think I've probably seen them all and am looking forward to another season. No fucking way I would ever do that shit, which is probably why I enjoy the show so much. As for "Ice Road Truckers", I just caught my first episode the other day. I remember seeing a real documentary on this a few years back and didn't realize a series had been born. More crazy shit I wouldn't do, so I'll probably continue to watch it. Quote
BruceH Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 This series reminds me of The Perfect Storm (book version.) A lot of stuff in there about the hazards of the fishing trade and its long history in New England. Quote

catesta Posted July 5, 2007 Report Posted July 5, 2007 Sorry, didn't read the whole thread. That's it! You my friend, will spend the next 22 hours bating pots. Quote
catesta Posted July 18, 2007 Report Posted July 18, 2007 Also looking interesting is Ice Road Truckers. http://www.history.com/minisites/iceroadtruckers There really is good stuff on TV... Okay, so now I've seen a few episodes of "Ice Road Truckers" and have to say I don't see it ever coming close to "Deadliest Catch" in popularity. If that one fat fuck that complains about his employees and brags about himself all the time is supposed to be the strongest character, I don't see the show making it another season. The potential was there but all the episodes seem too similar. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 After having watched three episodes, I agree. Quote
catesta Posted April 18, 2008 Report Posted April 18, 2008 New season started the other day. Anybody watching? I thought the prank the one boat crew pulled with the truck body tied to the end of the other boat's pot line was pretty damn funny. Quote
