mikeweil
At least Concord has updated their webiste. Much easier to navigate. They've adopted a pseudo-news site approach to their layout. ... but still not chance to sort out all K2 or SACD issues with the search function. felser
The people responsible for the Concord-era produced Fantasy boxes were a mix of the Fantasy staff and a new person that Concord had hired. That person has since left and gone to Rhino. It seems as though the second Coltrane box that was assembled will still be released but a third (to finish the series) may not. Also, the two further Miles boxes seem to have disappeared. Then I take back every nice thing I've had to say about Concord and how they started out managing the Fantasy holdings. They seem to have decided to take the low road after all. We can "look forward" to the Keepnews Collection mindless regurgitations and the "... plays for Lovers" idiocy and that's it? Not a penny of mine will go towards any of that. I will, however, buy the Trane box as soon as it comes out. Man, we're fickle! On the one hand we complain that Concord is too fixed on the bottom line by cutting the chaff and re-releasing the same old money-making stuff; on the other we bitch that they may not be releasing one of the more commercial/profitable entries in their reissue series. Not fickle at all. Give me a configuration and package and remaster that makes some sense and utilizes the capabilities of the CD medium better than what's been out before, and I'll buy it. The boxes they had come out with the past 6-12 months were beautiful. Reissue the same 36 minute albums on CD's with an Orrin Keepnews monogram being the primary difference, and I won't rebuy it. And I sure ain't buying ".... plays for Lovers"! I don't expect them to reissue John Dennis, Joe Holiday, couldn't believe it when Fantasy did the first time. I do expect them to be respectful with the catalogue. And if I didn't already own the titles and the K2's weren't available, I'd buy the Keepnews editions. Again, not sure what's fickle about any of that.
Big Al
At least Concord has updated their webiste. Much easier to navigate. They've adopted a pseudo-news site approach to their layout. ... but still now chance to sort out all K2 or SCAD issues with the search function. It appears that they have SCADs of SACD's. FWIW, they list a whole bunch of OJCs, maybe even all of them. All of the Blue Mitchell titles, f'rinstance, are listed on the site, as are the Johnny Griffin OJC's and Limited Edition OJC's. jazzbo
I don't know Al. . . a lot of the titles I bought last summer on the blowout sale. .. just aren't there.
Big Al
Hmmm... granted, my statement was based on the Mitchell & Griffin titles I saw; a lot of the Griffins are OJC Ltd. Editions, so I just naturally assumed that what was true for that was true for all. I could very likely be mistaken. Which titles did you get aren't listed? Ron S
I don't know Al. . . a lot of the titles I bought last summer on the blowout sale. .. just aren't there. Speaking of which, it sure feels like summer again around here . . . . Oh well, just some wishful thinking. Something tells me that summer blowout sale was a one-off related to the big warehouse move.
jazzbo
You may be right. Sure was a one of a kind event! I was just thinking of that sale yesterday when I was (unfortunately) spending a lot of time in the same waiting room I made my first order from that sale. . . one of the most exciting things that I've ever done in a clinic waiting room! I got myself pretty well set on OJC titles! Edited July 12, 2007 by jazzbo

I did a look for several titles in the Living Legends series and a Lu Watters title. .. gone. I'm not going to do a comprehensive look right now, but I bet that the "slow sellers/non post bop" titles are thinned out considerably. jazzbo
Yes, I just looked for "Jazz for Moderns" and some of the Nocturne titles. . gone.
Big Al
FWIW, J&R has OJC's on sale for $8.99 right now.
jazzbo
Did a little more looking. . . cds I bought from the blowout sale by Adderley, Charles, Eardly, Ellington and others. . . gone from the webpage. There was a serious reduction of in print titles last summer. Ah well. Glad I got 'em, sad they're not available. paul secor
I think twelve months from now we will know which path Concord will be taking. Right now, I'm not so sure, but wouldn't expect so much. If it ain't obvious by now what path Concord is taking, it never will be.
