Mingus At Monterey 1964

Does anyone have this? Mine's a Japanese import and I'm surprised by how much distortion is on it, particularly on Meditations.

I have the Jazz Workshop double LP only, but: the strange sound on track 1 (the Medley) - if the distortion you're talking of is similar - is actually no distortion, but Mingus' slippers making some noise while he's stamping his foot. Cannot remember anything particular about "Meditations", but the recording quality is sure not the best!

Apart from the foot-tapping there is also tape distortion on louder passages, on the CD I have heard (japan release from the 80's). A mediocre recording, but one of the best Mingus concerts on record.

Mingus recorded the concert for his own record label. The LP has all the annoucements accompanying the concert, but that was edited out on the Japanese CD reissue.

I noticed that the announcements that are listed on the album aren't there too. I know about the foot taping as Mingus writes about that in the notes for the album. It's the flute in Meditations and the louder passages in that song. My cd says K2 mastering, but I figured anybody would catch this very noticable distortion.

If the question is if the distortion is on the original issue, the answer is yes. Don't think that this was "professionally" recorded, so some distortion was probably inevitable. I can live with it.

I have a copy of the 'Mingus' label double LP issued through Fantasy and I can vouch that the sound quality throughout is pretty attrocious. The music makes up for it though.

My LP copy has a letter from Mingus asking for his fans to send money.

And if I remember correctly, by the time the record was distributed, the P O box had been closed because the rental fee had not been paid!

I've never heard the lps; the cd sounds acceptable to me. Incredible music!
