love this sentence

One constant factor in the success of the Contemporary Jazz genre has been the existence of cover songs.

thanks for the link!

Weird, all of this...

The Benson/Horizon has been out and is very visible here, in all the dump-bins all the time, the Zawinul is on Warner CD (it's the one really good album of those, i assume!), while the Ogermann/Brecker has been reissued in the best of the various Warner CD reissue series fairly recently, too...

I really don't get the point - unless it's making money to secure the other operations... but that wasn't really the point about Norah, back then... so there you go!

"...making a case for this vital and exciting genre..." (from the pitch for the Mosaic Contemporary series)

Talk about ad hype, those are two adjectives that one doesn't associate with smooth/contemporary jazz...

yes, i was also surprised when they announced these some time ago. frankly i see this as somehow degrading the Mosaic brand. and those covers! but it's up to them. they should know what they're doing ...

i will continue reaching for their top tier product. and i understand they need to secure new sources of revenue. the question is if there IS an interest in those releases beyond the people who already got them in the seventies ... unless they want them to buy them again! because i don't see any revival potential in those titles. but stranger things have happened.

not my cuppa. not even the cti business.

I may pick up FIRST LIGHT and SKY DIVE since the current CD incarnations of them sound dreadful to these ears.

Maybe.

I mean, it's not like you can't track down decent vinyl copies of these albums for a couple bucks....

The only "Contemporary" title I've bought is Freddie Hubbard's "Super Blue" - and, using the web site's search function, I couldn't find it. Deleted already?

Nothing I really want on there except maybe the King Curtis. My first reaction is "sad" but, like Hans, as long as it pays the bills for the hardcore stuff, I have no complaints.

A strange thing about the website is that it advertises the new Mosaic Contemporary releases as well as CDs from other labels, available at the True Blue store.

The first two items on the left side menu (Recommendations, Artist index) are about CDs available from the store and don't include the Mosaic Contempary releases.

Can't send them any more $$ than I do or I go broke!

Funny: last set that arrived (on Monday) a neighbour picked up and even paid the custom taxes for me so I didn't have to fetch it at the post office, very kind - anyway, he asked me what I'd ordered, something "complete", and I said yeah, Max Roach, so he said, ah that big black box one, I got that, too... seems this place must have just about the highest density of Mosaic customers... ;-)

has anyone heard Good King Bad ?...any thought s...

It's almost disco, but in a good way. Nice simple greasy grooves, and a version of "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" that is damn-near definitive. Plus it's got Joe Farrell on flute.

The only reason I'm not getting it is because my vinyl sounds good enough, and the clip of Benson "singing" "Hold On I'm Comin'" is scary.
