CJ Shearn Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 anyone picking this up? I plan to for my birthday tommorrow, the soundclips sounded nice, especially the cuts with Gerald Wilson. Let's hope Blue Note gave him another contract and that this isn't just a one off. Quote

CJ Shearn Posted June 20, 2007 Author Report Posted June 20, 2007 just got home with it and 4 other discs, so I will have to report back. One thing I can say is, Blue Note quality control rears its ugly head again, the BN logo on the back cover is heavily pixellated, as is "with Quentin Warren and Donald Bailey" on JOS' "Straight Life" which I also got for my birthday today. CJ Shearn Posted June 21, 2007 Author Report Posted June 21, 2007 listened to it, the Gerald Wilson arrangements are nice, "A Night in Tunisia" is worth the price of the disc alone! definitely. Quote
Bol Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 This one is leaving me a bit cold. A nice date by a nice man. But there is no fire, it seems. Quote
CJ Shearn Posted July 12, 2007 Author Report Posted July 12, 2007 really? I thought the solos on "Tunisia" were smoking, I think Kenny really loves the laid back style, he has for years, I have never heard him return to the fire of "Blue Lights", "Round About Midnight At the Cafe Bohemia" (w/ KD) or the Jimmy Smith sides, but he still is one of my all time fav. guitarists. Shawn Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 I haven't grabbed this one yet but definitely intend to. If anyone asks me for a "definitive" example of jazz guitar, Burrell is the guy! Burrell's "fire" has always been a quiet one, he's probably one of the tastiest players I've ever heard. He co-exists in that universe of truly soulful cats like Stanley Turrentine, Blue Mitchell, Wynton Kelly... Quote
