dutchmanx Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 Are there any heepsters here? Who knows about David Byron solo work - Rough Diamond? See Byron performs live Sea Song: Youtube Andrew Quote
Shawn Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 I'll bite. Not a huge fan, but I enjoy listening to them from time to time...and I've had some friends that were major fanatics. You have to give them their due in inspiring bands like Iron Maiden, etc. You can't really go wrong with the debut album, Demons & Wizards, The Magician's Birthday, Look At Yourself, etc. My fave tracks are Gypsy and Stealin' (which someone should cover, great tune). dutchmanx Posted June 21, 2007 Author Report Posted June 21, 2007 For me their strongest albums are Return to Fantasy (1975)with David Byron and Firefly(1977) with John Lawton Quote
Spontooneous Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Don't know that I've heard any of their music in 20+ years. Yet some songs are burned into my brain. So much music from that period lacks exuberance, but Heep doesn't. But "Stood on a bridge and/shunned religion..." is a line worthy of Spinal Tap. Quote
Shawn Posted June 21, 2007 Report Posted June 21, 2007 Yeah, the lyrics are pretty campy at times...I've often wondered how much of their thing was tongue in cheek? But here's the thing... Take a track like Gypsy from their debut. You can blueprint the ENTIRE 70's - 80's European Metal scene in that one fucking song. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, etc. While on the surface...yeah, it's pretty damn silly...but there's something very interesting going on underneath. Quote
mandrill Posted July 4, 2007 Report Posted July 4, 2007 Still listen to July Morning once in a while. The lads don't deserve all the wrath unleashed on them by critics. Beats Led Zeppelin for sheer fun. Quote

Jim Alfredson Posted December 19, 2009 Report Posted December 19, 2009 How can you not like a prog band that is obsessed with wizards? Quote
JSngry Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 How can you not like a prog band that is obsessed with wizards? Yeah, it's like booger sandwiches with snot mayonnaise! Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted December 20, 2009 Report Posted December 20, 2009 I nearly bought 'Look at Yourself' when it came out (c.1970/71?) - I recall hearing the title track on the radio. Is there a manic organ solo in the middle? I was really into manic organ solos at the time (Jon Lord, Emerson, Vinvent Crane etc). [but what 15 year old boy isn't!!!!!!!!] Might have to check Spotify to see if my memory is correct. Shortly afterwards I learnt from the NME that Uriah Heep were not cool and so never bought any of their records (traded in my Deep Purples and ELPs too!). Got my organ fix from Caravan, Soft Machine and Hatfield and the North instead. Oh, the power of the fashion police. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 a private look into the chewy household........ Quote
HWright Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 I like Uriah Heep too. My favorites are "Demons & Wizards" and "The Magician's Birthday." I also have "The Ultimate Collection"(2-disc best of). I first became interested in UH when I read about them in the liner notes to a Deep Purple remaster. UH also remind me at times of early Yes. A Lark Ascending Posted December 22, 2009 Report Posted December 22, 2009 Listened to 'Look at Yourself' (the track) on Spotify. Very much of its time. Not my cup of cocoa. Quote
Bright Moments Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 how is it that i am just discovering Lucifer's Friend?!!! Quote
JohnJ Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Spent most of the Virgin flight from London to Tokyo at the upper class bar with the current Uriah Heep line up late last year. Had a blast, but too hung over to use the invite to their concert that evening! Quote
gvopedz Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Take a track like Gypsy from their debut. You can blueprint the ENTIRE 70's - 80's European Metal scene in that one fucking song. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, etc. Rainbow? Are you saying that Uriah Heep was a blueprint for Richie Blackmore? I am not sure he would agree with that. Quote
sonnymax Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 I'm glad some people here really "get off" on this band. Although I enjoy similar kinds of music, they still sound like a Uriah Heap of shit to me. Quote
Shawn Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 how is it that i am just discovering Lucifer's Friend?!!! I love Lucifer's Friend. Fantastic stuff and defies basically all categories since they change styles on almost every album. When you are a "studio-only" band, you can do things like that. Take a track like Gypsy from their debut. You can blueprint the ENTIRE 70's - 80's European Metal scene in that one fucking song. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Rainbow, etc. Rainbow? Are you saying that Uriah Heep was a blueprint for Richie Blackmore? I am not sure he would agree with that. Blackmore's writing style changed once Rainbow started, the style he moved into is similar to what Heep was doing a few years earlier. Going from writing for Ian Gillan to writing for Ronnie James Dio probably had something to do with that as well. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Even in my early 1970s rock fandom, when I was listening to all kinds of hard rock of dubious quality, I never liked Uriah Heep at all. Quote
jazzbo Posted September 22, 2011 Report Posted September 22, 2011 Me either. And I still don't. Quote
