Eric Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Now that is pretty impressive! Thanks for posting Jim. Quote
Daniel A Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 They're offering the two Lucky Thompson GM albums 'I Offer You' and 'Goodbye Yesterday' at $10.99 apiece - and a double CD of both (a straight copy of the old GM twofer) at $13.99. A randomly chosen best-of from the two sessions is also available as 'Home Comin' on a $5.99 Lester Radio Corporation CD... Quote
mikeweil Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 I have only part of those Lucky tracks on Italian cheapo issues - if the Cook County Jail tracks are on somewhere, I'm in. Thanks, Jim!!! Nice fodder for the sexiest album covers on that page you linked, btw .... Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 OMIGODOMIGODOMIGODOMIGODOMIGOD!!!!!! (Hi Chewy) I've been after those Dakota Statons for ever!!!!!! And I don't have ANY O'Donel Levy! This is going to be expensive! MG Quote
JSngry Posted June 17, 2007 Author Report Posted June 17, 2007 HEY! Just use that list for a reference. Order throgh an O-Link whenever possible, ok? Quote

It's not just the Lucky material that they do this with either. I get the impression of somebody not really knowing the GM catalog just making a "blanket deal" with somebody who maybe did or didn't. But oh well... BTW - That Buddy Rich Last Blues Album is a personal fave of mine. Jacquet plays his azzoff, and you get George Freeman, Jimmy McGriff, Kenny Barron, & Bob Cranshaw all together in the same place at the same time along with him. Quote
Daniel A Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 I have only part of those Lucky tracks on Italian cheapo issues - if the Cook County Jail tracks are on somewhere, I'm in. I have the LP version of the twofer, and they're not included on that issue. But maybe the CD is different? On a sidenote: It appears that Cedar Walton is off-mike on the Jail recording and had to overdub everything, but you can also hear a faint second Fender Rhodes in the background, presumably from the original concert recording. Anyway, good to se all these coming out. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 i really really like the ramon morris disc............ Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 i got the odonell levy solo lp for .99 cents somewhere- its not as good as you would expect Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 i got the odonell levy solo lp for .99 cents somewhere- its not as good as you would expect Oh, it probably is - that's why I didn't get them when they came out MG Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 chewy chew chew is right...some of the levy stuff at least...i dunno i get sick of all the covers. of people make the world go round, etc. some of it is good stuff. interesting they didn't include the larry willis date. that's a great album. DMP Posted June 19, 2007 Report Posted June 19, 2007 My guess is that most of us who got the original LP's didn't pay much more than a dollar for them - and sometimes less! And some of this stuff was reissued in the early days if CD's (LCR label?) and they didn't go for that much more! Still, hard to resist Ramon Morris... Quote

Simba is the exception. Fewer covers and some great stuff by Manny Albam. IMO it's the one to have. The rest are pretty weak though. Michael Longo's 900 shares of the blues is a killer. True that the Ramon Morris and Larry Willis are two of the label's best. Quote

Yes, it is - Harold Vick is always an enjoyable player. MG There was also a good Mike Longo date on the label. I relistened to the Larry Willis recently, and don't think it has aged very well (except the title track, which is marvelous). The guitar player didn't do much for me. To me, the Lucky Thompson's are the best thing on the label, and I like the Ramon Morris, but it wasn't a major jazz label by any means. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 felz you know i have nothing but respect for you and your opinions but i disagree on the willis. i will give it a relisten but i felt (feel?) it is one of the best albums of the 70s. some of it sounds like in a silent way-lite and the one song with a caribbean-ish rhythm is annoying but.. the morris is a notch below the willis but still very good. both of these albums are many notches above much of the music coming out during this period. good progressive jazz with some electric touches. the morris does have a cover of "people make the world go 'round" hehe. i agree the levy album simba is his best on the label but it isn't awesome. very good, though. the steig stuff IS awesome, IMO. i am excited to find it on a low priced CD. that 900 shares longo starts off pretty nicely but i don't particularly care for where it ends up-sort of some bootleg spanish tinged kind of bolero thing. i also don't care for the close up of his facial hair. The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 The only cover of "People make the world go round" that's of any interest - and it's fucking winderful! - is Johnny Lytle's, on Milestone, which hasn't been reissued in the Orrin Keepnews collection. MG Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 (edited) Yes yes - EVERYONE should have George Freeman's "New improved funk"!!!!!! MG PS - pity there's only one copy - still, I've got mine so I can leave y'all to fight over DG's sole copy. Edited June 20, 2007 by The Magnificent Goldberg Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted June 20, 2007 Report Posted June 20, 2007 the "dump juice" mcgriff side is also very good. i think that one is worth an upgrade to CD. Quote
Guest donald petersen Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 ok can people lay down their personal faves out of these reissues? so many mcgriff/holmes/etc i have avoided because i thought they would be rote. what are some good ones to your ears? Quote
