The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 16, 2007 Author Report Posted June 16, 2007 "At his best" was recorded August 1966. "Musty Rusty" was recorded June 1965. MG Quote
Guy Berger Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 The question is: Why isn't this stuff available here directly from Universal? Agreed. As far as I'm concerned, if Universal isn't issuing this stuff then it's fair game for the pirates. If people feel guilty, they should mail a $5 check to Lou. Guy don't think Lou will get 5$ out of any of his albums sold... Yup. On further thought, if you REALLY want to do a good deed, burn or download the album, send 5 bucks to Lou, and donate the rest of the CD price to your favorite charity. Screw Universal AND the pirates. Guy Quote
David Ayers Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 A lot of recordings are licensed by majors to other labels. It is common. For example, Brilliant Classics do lots of stuff from EMI and Universal, as well as others such as Denon, Chandos, etc. Their jazz range includes Savoy, licensed for the world excluding USA and Japan. You can be certain that other labels have similar licenses excluding the USA. Lots of reissues are made in Europe outwith the 50 year rule (and even these of course have to pay composer royalties which in most cases are the ONLY royalties that are payable). You can be certain that outfits like EMI and Universal are in a position to protect their copyrights. For example, in the UK the Lonehill, Definitive (etc) stuff is distributed by Discovery Records, who would be a sitting duck if they were violating copyrights. Quote
monkboughtlunch Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 Past experience with labels from Spain suggest this will be an inferior sounding needle drop from an LP. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 17, 2007 Author Report Posted June 17, 2007 Past experience with labels from Spain suggest this will be an inferior sounding needle drop from an LP. I have Sonny Stitt's "Move on over"/"DJ Lounge" on the same label and it sounds OK to me (not that that's very much to go on for a hifi fanatic, of course ) MG Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted June 17, 2007 Report Posted June 17, 2007 (edited) I'll pass for now, and wait for a legitimate copy to be issued. I don't care for costly needledrop stuff. Sure wish the US labels would get around to reissuing some grease though. It seems they are all wrapped up in repackaging stuff that has already been around for ages. monkboughtlunch Posted June 18, 2007 Report Posted June 18, 2007 (edited) Spain is also known for dubbing from a CD version if it exists. Remember that Stitt's DJ Lounge on the Argo label was first reissued on CD in Japan from the original tapes. Spain may have used this as the source for their bootleg. Regardless, Musty Rusty has not been reissued on CD before. The only the source Spain can use is an LP as they don't have access to the Universal tape vault. Ironically, those who buy this will in many cases unknowingly purchase an inferior sounding version and reduce demand for a future legitimate release from the original tapes.
