The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Just seen at Dusty Groove that this is out. This is a must for all grease fans! These are not just great Cadet albums; they're great Lou Donaldson albums. Billy Gardner, Bill Hardman, Grant Green, Calvin Newborn, Ben Dixon, Grady Tate. Pooh gosh! Gotta get this soon! MG Quote
Shawn Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Agreed! At His Best is one of my absolute favorite Papa Lou recordings. "Gimme back that 100% skunk hair wig I bought you baby, I don't love you no more..." Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 14, 2007 Author Report Posted June 14, 2007 Looking at the Amazon UK site, it seems this isn't coming out until 9 July. MG Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 Its also being put out by thieves who are jumping the 50 year PD period by at least 7 years or so. Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 In addition, you may want to consider that Lou is alive and kicking, so buying this from thieves is an even more egregious way of making sure an artist gets screwed. Quote
Kyo Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 The question is: Why isn't this stuff available here directly from Universal? Quote
Dan Gould Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 (edited) The question is: Why isn't this stuff available here directly from Universal? Sort of like saying, "I like cocaine. Why isn't the local pharmacy allowed to stock it? If they aren't allowed to sell it, I will get it from the people who do sell it." These rare jazz recordings are like drugs to a lot of collectors. And the dealers - the Andorran reissue labels - who traffic in what is in fact stolen merchandise - give addicts a taste and have them hooked for life. Edited June 14, 2007 by Dan Gould Quote

Are you sure this isn't properly licensed? Where can one find out this stuff? It's important. MG Quote

I said it was "like saying" not exactly the same. The similarity of hardcore jazz fans jonesing for material like this, regardless of the source/legalities, to drug addicts jonesing for a fix was too appropriate to pass up. Nevertheless, if you prefer, feel free to substitute "I like Model T Fords. Why doesn't the local dealer stock them? If they can't/won't sell them, then I will buy them from people who will." Quote

Is there any reason to assume they've made an exception here? Quote

Guy Berger Posted June 14, 2007 Report Posted June 14, 2007 The question is: Why isn't this stuff available here directly from Universal? Agreed. As far as I'm concerned, if Universal isn't issuing this stuff then it's fair game for the pirates. If people feel guilty, they should mail a $5 check to Lou. Guy Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted June 15, 2007 Author Report Posted June 15, 2007 Thnking about it overnight, the one LD Cadet that is less effective than the others is "Rough house blues", arranged by Oliver Nelson. Not that it's bad but, as with "Lush life" Lou's style doesn't seem to click very well with band arrangements. MG Quote

monkboughtlunch Posted June 16, 2007 Report Posted June 16, 2007 As this "Musty Rusty" CD issued in Spain, it's likely to be a needle drop from an old Lp. Hopefully Universal Japan will get around to reissuing this on CD from the original master tapes. I have this date on Lp and it is wonderful! Quote
