Tjazz Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 (edited) Just heard that a DVD box of 5, will be released of Saturday Night Live music. Sounds interesting to me. DeepdiscountDVD.com has it listed for $41.05 Costco $39.99 Another website says that it contains 6 1/2 hours of music. There 50 tracks - guess 10 songs per/disc. There's probably some filler/interviews too. I'm looking forward to it. Edited September 4, 2003 by Tjazz Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 Half of it will be very interesting on up to pretty amazing. Half it will be totally "ho-hum". I'd love to rent it sometime, and give it a spin. Quote
Christiern Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 I agree, Rooster, SNL has a history of giving mediocrity a chance. Quote
.:.impossible Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 I always thought this would be a good idea. I came up with a list of past performances once while doing some searching. The list was actually more interesting than I had expected. I'd love to see what Sun Ra's Arkestra did. Same with Ornette! Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 4, 2003 Report Posted September 4, 2003 (edited) I've got the Sun Ra SNL thing on tape, and it's farily interesting, for the most part. Didn't realize Ornette had been on SNL - when was that??? (What year??) Miles was on too, circa 1981 I think. I've heard it, but never seen it. Edited September 4, 2003 by Rooster_Ties Quote

jacman Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Fear and George Harrison both had memorable appearances on SNL. Paul Simon was the host, when he brought out George Harrison for a couple of songs. i remember "Here Comes The Sun", can't remember the 2nd tune. IMO it's be worth the price. Quote
JSngry Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Didn't realize Ornette had been on SNL - when was that??? (What year??) Don't remember exactly. '77 or '78, I think. Maybe '79. Played w/Prime Time, and it ROCKED. Milton Berle was the host. Don't know if this is still the case, but when the original cast episodes first went into sydication and were made available for retail sale, this was the one episode that ws witheld, due to Berle's incessant and obnoxious hamming and piss-poor adlibbing. Vintage Uncle Miltie is a treat in it's own way, but this is not pretty. Too bad that Ornette got caught in the middle. Betty Carter was on in either the first or second season, and THAT was something to both see and hear. Hope that gets included, as well as the first appearance by Elvis Costello. Hell, the ENTIRE Ray Charles as host show should come out in a separate volume. THAT was some shit! Now, when is NIGHT MUSIC going to be made available? Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 I've still got a few of those Night Music shows on tape, and I'd love to see more someday. I think the ones I have include Sun Ra, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, and Karen Mantler, also I vaguely remember having the one with Sting. GREAT show that Night Music. Quote
.:.impossible Posted September 5, 2003 Report Posted September 5, 2003 Here is a comprehensive list: http://epguides.com/SaturdayNightLive/ Ornette appeared on April 14, 1979. I wasn't quite 2 years old, but I know my parents used to stay up and watch it with their friends at that age. I'd be willing to bet they saw this episode, but had no idea who Ornette is. 24 years later, Ornette Coleman is a Ralston household name! Quote
alankin Posted September 6, 2003 Report Posted September 6, 2003 Anyone have the full list of who's on the SNL music DVDs? My interest in this could vary from very low to fairly high depending who they've picked... Quote

JSngry Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 That not a particularly inspiring selection, imo, especiall from the "original" years. No Devo? Gimme a break! (and NO jazz, either? Screw'em) Somebody else who made a strong impression on SNL was Leon Redbone. Sure, he's pretty much a feelgood cliche self-parody these days, but when he did SNL the first time, he was all but unknown. Imagine seeing this guy you've never heard of before in a white suit, hat, and shades sitting on a stoll singing rather menacingly about how he'll go insane without his walking stick, accompanied only by his guitar and Howard Johnson's tuba. It was pretty intense at the time, I tell you. Quote
7/4 Posted September 8, 2003 Report Posted September 8, 2003 Thanks for the listing. I'm pretty sure I won't buy any of them! Quote
Tom Storer Posted September 9, 2003 Report Posted September 9, 2003 I wouldn't mind seeing many of the performances on volumes 1 and 2, but that's not nearly enough for me to buy the whole damn thing. To think they left off Betty Carter, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, George Benson, Keith Jarrett, Sun Ra, Eubie Blake, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock! Interesting that they haven't shown any jazz since Wynton in 1987. Quote
Tjazz Posted September 15, 2003 Author Report Posted September 15, 2003 Maybe we need to write the producers and have them create a jazz SNL music DVD. Quote
