kenny weir Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 More food for thought. Which raises for me an interesting issue that I don't think has been addressed here so far: Hands only - or knife and fork? Like fish and chips, I simply don't do takeaway or delivered burgers. Freshness is all. Eat in is the go for Bennie and me. But ... I do prefer a burger big and tasty and juicy, but one that I am STILL able to ge my mitts around. Even if I habitually cut my burgers in half on the plate. The hoomungous jobs that require cutlery, well I think I'd sooner have a "real" restaurant meal at those prices. Quote
Guy Berger Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 It'll be a sad day when I eat a burger with knife and fork. Guy Quote
Free For All Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 Not a big pickle person. The truth is out there...... Quote
Big Wheel Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 I must be the only person in California who thinks that In-and-Out is only marginally better than McDonald's. Maybe my local franchise is just unrepresentative? Quote
BERIGAN Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 The best burger I can imagine would require a trip to St. Louis to O'Connells. Dan!! You know!!! Never, ever liked really big hamburgers(think they were 10 oz) except there. Remember all the big biker looking dudes cooking? I swore they must have killed the cows in back to get hamburgers that tasted so good....Antique store upstairs as well. When we visited St. Louis after moving away in 83, our first stop was O'Connell's. Last time we went back in the late 90's, it didn't seem to be as good. When did you stop in? Are they still around? catesta Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 (edited) There's a good burger chain in SoCal called "Island's". One of the (many) things I miss about not living in San Diego anymore. Guy Yeah, that place isn't too bad. They are expanding quite a bit and have them in multiple states out west, including Arizona. It's only a matter of time before they head east. A chain that makes a fine burger, especially the turkey burger is Ruby Tuesday. Edited May 25, 2007 by catesta Quote
Free For All Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 I just ordered a meat grinder. I've been contemplating it for a while and this thread pushed me over the edge. I use ground meat to cook with (turkey & beef mostly) and would like to have a little quality control. Plus I'm a "gadget junkie". Quote

Makes me think of the Seinfeld episode when Kramer buys a meat slicer. Some classic lines... Kramer: Hey, our meat problems are solved. Jerry: Where did you get this thing? Kramer: I traded it to my sausage press. Look how thin that is, see that's all surface area. The taste has nowhere to hide. Kramer: This slicer is indomitable. Jerry: Where did you get that butcher's coat? Kramer: You buy enough meat, they'll give you anything Elaine: Can it cut that thin? Kramer: Oh, I've cut slices so thin, I couldn't even see them. Elaine: How did you know you cut it? Kramer: Well, I guess I just assumed. Quote

Quincy Posted May 25, 2007 Report Posted May 25, 2007 I'm tempted to get the grinder attachment for the Kitchen Aid mixer. Anyone have one and do they work well? Kitchen Aid mixers have great motors, so I'd think it'd work fine, but thought I'd ask just in case. Quote

Tim McG Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 Is the "In & Out" chain as good as "they" say? Not sure, but it is pretty good. Guy In & Out never impressed me much when out west. One chain that did though, was Fatburger. Fatburger is good...but not near as good as a Tommy's Burger. None better in SoCal, IMHO. In-n-Out has it all over the rest of the burger joints in California.. Quote
poetrylover3 Posted May 26, 2007 Report Posted May 26, 2007 The best hamburger in St Louis-and the best I've had anywhere- is at an Irish pub called O'Conell's . Not only do they know how to cook medium rare but each burger is a small materpiece. I don't know the how of it but O'Connell 's has never failed to deliver in the 20+ years I've been going there. PS The rib tips are mighty fine, too. Peace, Jeff T Quote

Maybe my local franchise is just unrepresentative? I've been to a few of them and feel the same way (and I absolutely can not eat McAnything). I'm mystified by the adoration of the place. I'm pretty sure they are just cooking up frozen flat patties like the ones you can buy at the store and slapping them on a semi-fresh Wonder bun. Heard they treat their workers pretty well, though. Nope. Fresh patties. As to the staff they pay $9.00 bucks an hour just to start you off. For a kid, that's pretty darn good, IMHO. Edited May 26, 2007 by GoodSpeak Quote

(BB) Posted May 27, 2007 Report Posted May 27, 2007 I had a kobe beef burger on Long Island last year that was almost too good to be true. I tried one for lunch to day and was decidedly underwhelmed. It didn't help that I asked for med-rare the waiter said they could only do med and the thing showed up brown the whole way through. Quote
